What day is it?
It’s today.
This “new normal” feels depressing and not knowing what the future holds for us is anxiety-giving. This condition is preventing us from planning and setting goals that gives us a reason to look forward to the future optimistically.
It seems like everything is going to change from now on — from simple daily duties like grocery shopping to going on vacation. The emotional scar this period is going to leave on all of us is immeasurable. We are going to feel its effects on a daily basis while we are trying to live our lives’. No sports, no concerts, no dining outside. And when these comforts do come back, it’s still going to take a while before we get used to being in close contact with other people again.
These are all things that we have no control over. We need to keep this in mind going forward. All of us will just have to wait and see to understand this new normal.
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” ― Eckhart Tolle: The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
What we do have control over is now. We have power over the never-ending now. With this in mind, our anxiety towards the unforeseeable future can lessen.
Everyone has their own questions going around in their heads’ right now. Is there going to be a second wave? Am I going to be able to pay my rent? When will I see my family again?
Constantly spinning these questions around in our heads will only make the situation worse. We don’t know how these questions will be answered in the future. What we can do instead is be our best-self today so we can be fully ready when it is time to face these questions.
By focusing on today, we will lessen our load and let life take care of the uncontrollable. Focus on what we can do — the now — and give it our best-self so we are ready for the future when it becomes the present. It’s simple but difficult to see when our mind is blurred with the anxiety of the unknowable future.
“What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day,” said Pooh.” ― A.A. Milne
