The Victims of Socialism
The Republican National Committee today launched Victims of Socialism because too many people don’t know the truth and tragedy of allowing government to control your life.
The latest Pew data finds 55 percent of Americans have a negative view of socialism and 42 percent have a positive view. The biggest selling point? About 31 percent of supporters believe socialism “creates a fairer more generous system.” They haven’t experienced it. Still, just 4 percent of pro-socialist Americans think socialism is “better” than capitalism.
“We’re from the government and we’re here to help,” Ronald Reagan used to say to widespread laughter — because we all knew that even when totally well-intentioned, giving such control to government rarely works for long.
Reagan knew a lot about socialism: the Nazis were the National Socialist Party and their 1939–40 partner and rival communism shared the exact same DNA and the same methods:
- “Politicians who are like poets’’ promise everything. Preach equality (which everyone loves), promise the world. We will fix all your problems, trust us!
- Take control of everything, silencing all opposition including (and especially) religion.
- Do everything possible to delete the true God and replace God with an all powerful “new god and ultimate authority” — the state.
Napoleon followed these steps in the 1790s. So did the communists and the Nazis because these steps are what socialism is all about: Deleting God and replacing Him with a new god.
Reagan saw this up close as did St. John Paul the Great (whose feast is celebrated today). Their story of facing and ultimately defeating this great beast is the central theme of “The Divine Plan,” which debuts to a one night only nationwide showing November 6 to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“When you say socialism, a lot of people in this country don’t understand what that means and so when you hear it firsthand from people from Venezuela or Cuba who have dealt with socialism, who’ve been driven from their countries, who have dealt with the poverty and the instability it brings to their government, I think it really resonates,” Republican National Chair Ronna McDaniel said in announcing the new website.
You’d think we would have learned this history: there was a nearly unanimous national consensus when Congress voted with no opposition to establish the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. More than 100 million died at the hands of this “government first” ideology. But time passes and we forget, especially our children.
Teach them the truth: that freedom is better than slavery, that God is a higher and wiser authority than humanity. Government can do many things but when it’s all-powerful, the human temptation to abuse power is disastrous.
