Poll: “Historical Amnesia’’
A third of Millennials have a “favorable” view of communism: 15 percent say they wish the Soviet Union still existed
The percentage of Americans age 23 to 38 “extremely likely’’ to vote for a Socialist has doubled in the past year, according to a new poll released today.
It found 27 percent calling Donald Trump a bigger threat to world peace than the leaders of Russia, China or North Korea. But 72 percent don’t know a Soviet/Nazi partnership (a joint attack on Poland) started World War II.
They don’t know 100 million were killed by communism. As many as 70 percent of Millennials say they could support a Socialist candidate, the fourth annual poll found.
“The historical amnesia about the dangers of communism and socialism is on full display in this year’s report,” said Marion Smith, executive director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, established by a near unanimous vote of Congress in the 1990s.
Examples of the historical amnesia:
- A third favorable about communism. A staggering 36 percent of Millennials reported a favorable view of communism — up 8 percentage points from the 2018 poll.
- Better off with communist Russia? 15 percent of Millennials agreed “the world would be better off’’ if the Soviet Union still existed.
- Don’t know the cause of World War II: 76 percent of young people didn’t know World War II began after a 1939 pact between Germany and the Soviet Union (both invaded Poland in September 1939 starting the war).
- Better off without property? 22 percent of Millennials (versus 1 percent of the Silent Generation born during or before World War II) agreed “society would be better if all private property was abolished.
- Communism without government control? While communism and socialism center around government control and ownership of property and actions, 66 percent of Millennials (two-thirds) say they trust themselves more than the decisions of a community (19 percent) or government (15 percent).
- Declaration of Independence. Just 57 percent of Millennials (compared with 94 percent of the Silent Generation) believe the Declaration of Independence better protects freedom and inequality than the Communist Manifesto.
- Just half of Millellials say they favor capitalism, still remembering the great recession of 2008–09.
While the rest of the world is getting younger, the Western world is aging and the poll found 66 percent of U.S. Millennials can’t even accurately define or explain Socialism.
Meanwhile, a record 41 percent of the world population is age 24 or younger and they’re angry with a surge in mass protests around the globe throughout October (including places like Hong Kong that resent communist China’s behavior).
The truth. A new documentary, “The Divine Plan’’ details the story of what communism was like and how and why it was defeated. It launches on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Last week, the Republican Party launched Victims of Socialism, a website telling the stories of Americans who escaped Socialist nations.
