Summary

Eva MacInnes reflects on the sentiment behind gift-giving, advocating for the value of thoughtfulness over material suitability, and shares personal anecdotes about meaningful gifts she has received.

Abstract

In a thoughtful exploration of the adage "It's the thought that counts," Eva MacInnes discusses the importance of intention in gift-giving. Despite occasionally receiving inappropriate or unsuitable gifts, MacInnes emphasizes that the effort and thought behind a gift are what truly matter. She recounts cherished gifts such as a hand-crocheted blanket from her mother-in-law and flowers that are safe for her cats. MacInnes, who identifies as a complex yet simple woman in her desires, appreciates any gift, including practical items like gift cards and money, seeing them as considerate choices for someone hard to shop for. She invites readers to engage with her perspective and share their own views on the matter.

Opinions

  • MacInnes believes that the thought behind a gift is more important than the gift itself, even if the gift is not to her taste.
  • She values gifts that are clearly chosen with her preferences in mind, such as non-toxic flowers for her cats and a labor-intensive hand-crocheted blanket.
  • MacInnes does not consider gift cards or money to be thoughtless gifts; instead, she sees them as thoughtful acknowledgments of her being difficult to shop for.
  • She suggests that a gift lacking personal relevance may indicate a lack of genuine thought about the recipient's likes and dislikes.
  • MacInnes appreciates simple gifts that align with her straightforward needs, like a plush throw blanket, candles, and soda stream bottles.
  • She encourages honesty in gift preferences, viewing it as a form of self-awareness rather than selfishness.

The Thought That Counts

Is it the thought that counts or is it insensitive?

This fabulous prompt Deep Thought December Prompts (Day 9) is from Ruby Noir at Read or Die.

“It’s the thought that counts”. That is definitely true of my prompts — but what about other things in life? This is usually said about receiving gifts that you don’t want.

Do you agree that the thought matters more? Or would you prefer not to receive things that you don’t like/want? Is the latter completely selfish or just honest?

And if someone gets you something that you do not like — is there actual thought involved? Shouldn’t they know you wouldn’t like it if they were thinking about you? Think about that… and explain your response.

I believe that it’s the thought that counts, even when the present is bizarrely inappropriate or not my kind of thing.

Personally, I appreciate any gift given to me. The fact that someone took time out of their day to think of me means a lot, no matter the gift. I don’t think that gift cards or money are thoughtless gifts. I think it’s the giver recognizing that I’m difficult to shop for.

Some gifts may mean more than others. For example, flowers are always appreciated. My cats and I prefer roses, since just about every other common bouquet flower is toxic to them. And no matter where I put them in the house they get munched on.

Another lovely gift I received was a hand crocheted blanket from my mother-in-law. It took her a year to make it. Each month she received yarn in the mail and instructions on how to do the new kind of stitch. I keep it by my side of the bed. I’m afraid to take it out because of the cats constant kneading.

Since I am difficult to shop for, I sometimes drop hints as to what I want. Or I come right out and say it, as is the case this year with my husband. I just want a nice plush throw blanket, candles and some new soda stream bottles. I may be a complex woman, but I have simple wants and needs.

Thank you for reading my story. I’d love to hear your responses.
