The Power Within You(r Trees)

Sometimes digging deeper shouldn’t be futile

The moral of this story is not only to love trees (instead), but if you weren’t sure of an answer to a difficult question, likely the answer can be found within you(r trees).

So let’s tap into the heartwood of what trees can already do for you for the special holiday on 14 February 2021. Especially, if you’ve forgotten or don’t know what to do — these are some last minute considerations.

№1 So Valentine’s Day is upon us, and you’re (sniff sniff) a lone ranger or a lone cowgirl. (What do you do?)

You cut down a tree and follow the Woodworkers of the World Unite!!! publication for any of the build ideas and design tips.

You hug a tree. (It’s therapeutic and your neighbors will appreciate it too ‘cuz they’ve got their own holiday dilemmas).

And if you plan on taking the advice on both of these, you’ll probably want to do the latter before the former.

№2 Okay, you’re not the loner type after all (at least on Hallmark days), but you don’t know how to express it to you know who (even to a crush)? (What do you do?)

You carve out the initials along with yours in a heart within you(r tree). This works as a self-exercise as well.

№3 Okay, now you say that’s not obvious nor romantic enough? (What do you do?)

You hang a swing on a tree — and you know you just saved yourself a trip to the store, done your part in recycling some rope and planks, and made a dramatic (and obviously romantic) fixture right in your backyard! (This works as a self-amusement as well).

№4 You’re right. It’s winter where you are, so no fun swinging out in the cold, not to mention your tree isn’t exactly big enough to hold your weight. (So, what do you do?)

You swing your axe instead and show off those skills and chop that tree wood for the indoor fireplace you promised to use some day.

№5 You say you don’t have a fireplace? (What do you do?)

You bundle up (or not, if you’re in a less harsh climate) with your valentine and you take your valentine out for a nice walk among the trees in the park. Then, recite the poem ‘Trees’ by Joyce Kilmer because he was a badass poet that can save your Valentine’s Day.

№6 Okay, you say that you really need to or should give a tangible gift. (What do you do?)

You pick up a bunch of fallen pine cones from your yard, or your neighbor’s yard or from the park, and make any of the various D.I.Y. amazing crafts (this works for twigs and branches as well) — like ornaments, wreaths, mantle pieces, table decor, candle holders, fire-starters, artworks, etc. (it’s only limited by your imagination!) and here are some ideas to get you started:

№7 Okay, okay. You say you’re not the crafty type and you need to give a more traditional gift. (What do you do?)

You cave in and buy a bottle of perfume or cologne. But just remember, the main ingredients in them, olibanum (or frankincense) and myrrh both, came from very far away endangered species of trees!

(Both aromatic resins come from the saps of the genus Burseraceae which are native to the Arabian Peninsula and Africa).

Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day 2021!

This was the third installment about the ubiquity but underappreciated point about trees.
