SERIAL FICTION

The Lonely Need To Choose Between Husband And Soulmate

Shadows Of Mayday #26: Kaitlyn #1: Kaitlyn has come to a crossroads in her life, and has to make a choice.

Start reading here

Kaitlyn stowed her cabin luggage in the overhead compartment, found her seat at the window and buckled herself in.

She seemed to be oblivious to all the other people around her.

Other passengers found their seats, found space for small suitcases and carry-bags and buckled themselves in for the takeoff. Someone sat down next to Kaitlyn, but she barely noticed. Kaitlyn’s thoughts were with her husband.

Will he still be my husband when I return? Do I still want to be married to him?

She kept on returning to the same questions.

What about the kids? What about my beautiful soulmate? Can I live without him, after the wonderful months we had together? Am I willing… am I able to let him go if I stay with my husband?

She closed her eyes and leaned her head against the cool cabin window.

I don’t know. I don’t know what I want. What must I do? What’s the next step?

Kaitlyn needed clarity, and the only way to find it was to be away from everyone and everything.

She wanted no one to influence her train of thought. She had to work this out for herself.

Her final decision would change the lives of more than only her own. If she stayed with her husband, she would have to let her soulmate go. But, if she continued the relationship with her soulmate, a divorce would undoubtedly follow. She would have to move out and leave her kids with her husband.

Was she able to do that? Could she throw away everything they had built up over all these years?

Thankfully, the law firm where Kaitlyn worked as attorney gave her a month off from work, even though she had several cases scheduled for the next weeks. Two colleagues took over three of her urgent cases. Trial dates for the other cases Kaitlyn worked on were too far in the future to worry about them. Those could wait until after her return.

Kaitlyn’s thoughts traveled back to when she met him — her soulmate.

It was totally unintentional. She wasn’t looking for love outside of her marriage. Information was all she wanted.

Her marriage had come to a point where it was dull and boring, and passion seemed to have disappeared out the back door.

Making love to her husband wasn’t the same as it was before. They were only going through the motions and sometimes more than a month went by without sex.

Kaitlyn reached out on social media, seeking information from other people. She tried to find people in a similar situation: married at a young age, still interested in sex and in love, but bored with a partner.

There were women who answered her, but even though their marriages bored them, they didn’t mind the lack of sex as they had a low sex drive. They had no answers to Kaitlyn’s questions or any advice to give her, other than that she should accept her life as it was.

Kaitlyn didn’t want to accept it.

She wanted to change things; to bring back the passion into her marriage. She dismissed the advice from those women.

One day, he answered one of her questions. The more she asked him, the more his answers intrigued her.

He intrigued her.

He told her about his life. He lived alone, but was involved in relationships with two women. The women knew about each other and sometimes spent time together. He was in love with both, and they were in love with him.

There’s always room for one more.

Kaitlyn had stared at those words on her screen, knowing it was a hint towards her.

She ignored it and continued to ask questions. Kaitlyn was aware of the existence of polyamorous relationships, but had never talked to someone who claimed to be polyamorous.

Polyamory is not the same as polygamy, was one message he had sent her. Another was: Polyamorous people have more than one loving relationship. It usually, but not always, involved a sexual relationship.

Kaitlyn was curious to learn more.

He shared more about his relationships.

One of the most important things in a polyamorous relationship is open communication between all people involved. It’s my task to love them and make them feel special, but also to make sure I spend equal time with each of them.

Kaitlyn had a million questions, and he answered each one of them. There was something about him that held Kaitlyn’s attention.

Can we meet?

Kaitlyn wanted to talk to him face-to-face.

She had more questions, but wanted to look into his eyes when he answered them. He seemed sincere in his on-screen messages, but she wanted to see his expression when he talked.

They set a date to meet on a terrace in the middle of the city. She was there long before the time they had agreed on. Sitting in the shadow, in the corner of the terrace, she watched every person who walked towards her.

He caught her eye the moment he crossed the street. A well-built, confident man in a dark suit and light yellow shirt. No tie. Casual, but smart.

Handsome.

Kaitlyn’s heart beat faster as he approached. She couldn’t remember the last time a man had caused her heart to beat like that.

If she hadn’t already, Kaitlyn fell hopelessly in love with him that afternoon.

He was everything she had ever been looking for in a man.

No, that wasn’t true.

Her husband once was that man. That was when she was still young and immature. This man was the man she needed and wanted for her mature self.

Somehow, she and her husband had both grown through life, but in different directions. They were not on the same road anymore. Their marriage had become what she had hoped it never would: there was love, but no excitement and no more special moments. Whatever they did, they did with no passion, even when making love.

Actually, it didn’t deserve to be called ‘making love’ anymore. They only did what they needed to satisfy their own needs, using each other for it.

It was different with this attractive man.

From the moment he took place across from her, sexual tension surrounded them. Kaitlyn had difficulty keeping her eyes off his face. She saw the honesty, love, and devotion in his eyes when he spoke about the two ladies in his life.

Does my husband speak about me in the same way? she wondered for a moment.

She immediately dismissed the thought and concentrated on the man in front of her. Kaitlyn asked him more questions, and he answered all of them patiently, elaborating on things she didn’t understand. It was hours later that Kaitlyn glanced at her watch.

“I’m so sorry, but I have to leave.”

She still had an hour’s drive ahead of her and dusk was already setting in. He hugged her tight when he left and whispered in her ear: “There’s always room for one more.”

Her knees went weak.

She gasped.

He turned around and walked away. She stared at his back, wondering what he was doing to her. Kaitlyn recognized the sexual excitement, something she hadn’t experienced in many years. The next day, they continued their conversation on social media. When he suggested another meeting, she was keen to go.

I’m booking us a hotel room.

She stared at the words on her screen before she slowly typed her one-word reply: Okay.

His next message was: It’s not only to talk.

Again she waited before she typed: I know.
