Virgil Abloh, 41 years old, died of his two year battle with cancer, ardiac angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer in which a tumor occurs in the heart. He left his mark on the fashion industry and was best known as the Star designer of high-end streetwear, the founder of Off-White’s collection in 2013, the first Black artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, and collaborated with the likes of Kanye West, Nike, McDonald’s, Ikea, and others.

Abloh was a visionary designer who was a leading fashion executive recognized as the Karl Lagerfeld, a German creative director, fashion designer, artist, photographer, and caricaturist, of his generation.

Abloh grew up in Chicago and was a first-generation Ghanaian American whose mother was a seamstress and taught him to sew, other than that he had no formal fashion training but achieved a degree in engineering and a master’s in architecture.

When you do what you love, fame and fortune will follow. Abloh emerged in a very short span of time as a fashion designer who turned heads with his fashions, became one of fashion’s most heralded designers and was, named one of Time magazine’s most influential people in 2018.

A major crossroad in Abloh’s career was in 2009 while he was working at a screen-printing shop was his by chance meeting Kayne West. After that, the two interned together at the LVMH brand Fendi, where he worked as West’s creative director.

Thereafter, his joint ventured as art director for the 2011 album “Watch the Throne” by West and Jay-Z, he was nominated for a Grammy. Abloh’s work with Kanye West led to future endeavors and provided wider recognition. He went on to partner his Off-White label with Nike for a line of frenzy-inducing stylish and Helvetica fonts’ sneakers.

His other designer credits included; designed furniture for Ikea, refillable bottles for Evain, and Big Mac cartons for McDonald’s. His work was exhibited at the Louvre, Gagosian, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

In conclusion, Abloh designer’s touch undoubtedly left an imprint on the fashion, designer, and artistic world that will live forever. A short life lived but a life that lived its fullest potential. Many will remember him as “a renaissance man in the fashion world” as he was so fondly called, as he called himself “a maker”, both labels tell the accurate story of a man who came, did, and is now gone but left a legacy to be adored and cherished.
