The Global History of Cannabis
Cannabis has been a long-stigmatized plant, but did you know it was revered in many ancient cultures?

The history of cannabis spans thousands of years and has been intertwined with various cultures and civilizations around the world. Cannabis has been used for medicinal, religious, and recreational purposes for millennia. Its use dates back to ancient China, where it was used for medicinal purposes around 2700 BCE. Cannabis use spread to India, the Middle East, and eventually to Europe and Africa.

As author Mike Crowley explored in The Secret Drugs of Buddhism, there is significant evidence that cannabis was one of the sacraments used in this religion, most likely a spiritual relationship that was practiced by pre-Buddhist cultures and subsumed and incorporated into Buddhist practices.
In many ancient cultures, cannabis held significant cultural and religious importance. In India, it was associated with the god Shiva and used in spiritual rituals. In ancient Egypt, cannabis was used for medicinal purposes and religious ceremonies.

Cannabis has a long history of medicinal use across various cultures. Ancient Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations used cannabis for its therapeutic properties.
Cannabis was introduced to the Americas by European colonists. Hemp, a variety of cannabis, was cultivated for its fiber, which was used for making textiles, ropes, and sails.
In the early 20th century, many countries began to criminalize cannabis due to concerns about its psychoactive effects and potential societal harm. The United States implemented strict laws against cannabis in the 1930s, which influenced global drug policies.
Despite the prohibition and stigmatization of cannabis, people continued to use the plant both recreationally and medicinally. In the latter half of the 20th century, there was a growing movement to legalize cannabis for medical purposes. This movement gained momentum in the 21st century, leading to the legalization of medical and recreational cannabis in several countries and states.
Many countries have legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use, while others have decriminalized its possession in small amounts. In the US, legalization and decriminalization of the plant are continuing to unfold. The global cannabis industry is rapidly expanding, with various products such as oils, edibles, and topicals becoming more widely available.
The long and winding history of cannabis use reflects its complex and varying cultural, medicinal, spiritual and legal roles throughout different eras and cultures.
However, while cannabis has a long history of use in many different civilizations, it serves us to remember that the potency of cannabis products has largely increased due to intentional breeding and cultivation practices.
