Today is Asalha Buddha Day here in Thailand which celebrates Lord Buddha’s first teaching after his enlightenment. It was given in the Deer Park in Sarnath to five disciples who he had previously practiced with.

It’s known as ‘The First Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma’ and is the very heart of Buddhist teachings. We can take this good opportunity to reflect upon the content which teaches us **The Four Noble Truths ie. that:

  • there is suffering (dukkha)
  • suffering has a cause (attachment)
  • suffering can be overcome (non-attachment)
  • there is a path which leads to the cessation of suffering (*The Noble Eightfold Path)

*The Noble Eightfold Path consists of: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is a comprehensive link if you would like to know more:

We can use today to remember this teaching and to set the intention to re-enforce our practice and stay on the path which leads to liberation from suffering.

Have a peaceful and reflective day.

With metta 🙏

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
