The Ever Flowing Garage

In an abundant world, projects are always flowing

Our garage is one of the most abundant places I have ever seen. It seems like tools and projects grow like weeds in there. Because I am a professional organizer, I have organized our garage many times. I find myself in there just about every week, going through things. I believe that this space, like most spaces in a home, is never going to be static. Just like life, it flows. We are working step by step, project by project, improving our home. There always be incoming and outgoing things in that space. Right now, we have several projects in process: baseboards for a bathroom, two light fixtures to replace, and a tile kitchen backsplash to install. With each project comes materials, new tools, and things to organize and sort through. This space shows me abundance every day. I am exploring this topic on a 100-day journey through the book The Tao of Abundance: Eight Ancient Principles for Abundant Living by Laurence G. Boldt, among other books and sources.

I once thought that someday I would have the perfect system for organizing our garage. Abundance had other ideas. I have found that every time I organize this area, more projects, recycling, giveaway bags, or other things flow in. Beautifully, life is showing me that this space flows. Now it delights me to tinker away in this space, just tidying it up as we go. I know that more will always be flowing in.

This is something that I tell clients: Life and your home is always in process. In this way, we can have grace for ourselves because a perfect system does not exist. We are growing, changing, and flowing with life. There is continually something to learn, to improve, and to organize. Instead of being frustrating, it liberates us to know that there will always be something new to do.

As we focus in our thoughts and actions on things that bring a feeling of connection with all life, we begin to move with the flow of the Tao. In this way, we allow blessings to come to us as part of the “overflow” of an abundant spirit-not as things we crave and struggle for from a sense of lack or desperation. To come from lack can only bring lack, even when we get what we think we need. On the other hand, when we come from the spirit of abundance we attract ever greater abundance. -Laurence G. Boldt

Creating a spirit of abundance is what this journey is all about. Loving and appreciating everything that we have, as well as what we can give and share with others, helps us to develop a spirit of overflow. Just yesterday, I scheduled a pick up of a few bags of donations to a charity. It gave me great joy to pack up items in bags, arrange them in the garage, and know that they would be received and used by someone else. Our garage is a place where dreams are created. We share the extra things that we have, we store items to help us continue to make our home a beautiful place, and we have extra food to keep us going through the winter months.

My prayer and my intention for you today is to be thankful for any overflow in your life. If an area keeps getting disorganized, it just means you have more to give. How beautiful!
