The Cascades Provided An Escape From the World

Reciprocal Nature Prompt: “Thrilling trekking experiences”

I recall the blessings that the Cascade Mountains gave me. I moved to Chelan, Washington after my divorce. The years 2000 to 2007 were some of the best years of my life. The hills beckoned every free day I had from the bakery. My husky’s eyes lit up whenever she saw me grab my knapsack.

Hiking a trail in the mountains was her favorite activity. I incorporated running and cycling into my weekly practice. But hiking a scenic high alpine trail enhances my relationship with Nature.

I feel I’m an integral part of the universe. My senses come alive. I have keener eyesight. A sustained energy flows through my body.

The pace is slower as I place foot steps with care. Loose stones or branches could precipitate a fall. No day dreaming allowed. Far from civilization, an injury can have dire consequences. Chan Teh loves to detect all the diverse smells that assail her. I look for signs of movement in the shrubs and trees. I know wild animals and native birds lurk within. It is a thrill when I chance to see them.

Author’s photo of mountainside wildflowers.

There is always a spectacular sight around the bend. It could be wildflowers displaying their majesty on a mountainside. It amazes me. There are so many. I pause to admire their beauty. The sight makes my spirit soar.

Author’s photo of marmot among the rocks.

Is that a marmot ahead peeking from behind those boulders? Chan Teh’s shackles raise. She’s wary of the mammals presence. It shies away from us.

Author’s photo of clear rushing stream.

We’ve come to a clear rushing stream. Chan Teh and I have to look for a safe place to cross. She pauses to lap a drink. The climb has made her thirsty. I drink from my water bottle. And pop a handful of trail mix into my mouth.

Author’s photo of perfect spider’s web.

Before I move on I spy a perfect spider’s orb web. I have to take a picture before the elements destroy its handiwork.

We’ve reached a high alpine lake. This looks like a perfect place to stop for lunch. I hunt for a handy log or boulder to sit on. Chan Teh sits beside me expectantly. She knows she’ll get to share part of my sandwich. We are far from the cares of the world. The setting wraps me in serenity. This is the only drug I need to ensure my well being.

Author’s photo of boulder field.

The time has come. We have to descend, passing a huge boulder field on the way down. I don’t want to leave. It is so peaceful here. I feel refreshed and brimming with happiness. Chan Teh feels the same way. Her tail wags, expressing her joy.

Author’s photo of lush forest.

The terrain has leveled out. We’re in the midst of the forest, back near the trailhead.

My Subaru awaits in the parking lot. Chan Teh lays down and takes a nap on the drive home. I stop at the Dairy Queen and buy two vanilla cones, one for Chan Teh. It is our special treat after every outing into the hills.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our trek into the Cascade Mountains. I miss our excursions there, but the delightful memories stay with me always.
