Have You Been Looking For Happiness?

We don’t need a rocket scientist to find our personal version of it

Photo by Leo Rivas on Unsplash

Happiness isn’t that thing you buy Or find in any store, You may search low and high But it’s waiting at your door.

Happiness is not a rainbow’s end A pot of gold found at last, It’s the adrenalin in your heart When you’re doing something fast.

Happiness is not a perfect day When everything goes right, It’s the smile on your lips When things look just a little bright.

Happiness isn’t a treasure to store away, It blossoms when shared with glee, With someone dear, along life’s way A dance of joy between you and me.

Happiness is not a thing you find But something you create, So open up your heart and mind You’ll see it’s right there on your plate.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. ~ Abraham Lincoln

We would all like to be happier, right? And yet, there are times when it seems like the Holy Grail. We look and look. What is the secret?

Each one of us has her own ideas of happiness. While some of us successfully manage to go through life balancing our ups and downs and automatically answer “Fine” when someone asks “How are you?”, there are others who feel the need to relentlessly chase happiness.

Let me narrate a Native American parable — The Secret to a Happy Life. See if it resonates with you.

One day the Creator gathered all the animals and said, ‘I want to hide the secret to a happy life from humans until they are ready for it.’ ‘Give it to me. I’ll fly it to the moon,’ said the Eagle. ‘No, one day soon they will go there and find it.’ ‘How about the bottom of the ocean?’ asked the Salmon. ‘No, they will find it there too.’ ‘I will bury it in the great plains,’ said the Buffalo. ‘They will soon dig and find it there.’ ‘Put it inside them,’ said the wise grandmother Mole. ‘Yes,’ said the Creator, ‘it is the last place they will look.’

And now, do you know where to find happiness?
