The Best Source of Fun in Trinidad & Tobago and a Different Kind of ‘Bliss Station’

Everything Fun writing prompt response

Maracas Beach — Trinidad & Tobago — JoAnn Ryan

Splashing in the ocean, drying off in the sun, reclining in a beach chair, eating snacks, drinking libations and reveling in the beauty of the tropics — is there anything better really?

While there are plenty of fun things to do and see in Trinidad, if we’re talking the best here, it’s hardly a big surprise what comes out as the clear winner — the beach!

A no-brainer, right? Although, for several months after arriving in TT, the beach had been closed due to COVID restrictions. This equated to no beach fun!

In the Caribbean! You gotta be crazy!

Is there any end to the various ways COVID has just completely sucked ass?

Since the beaches opened back up in January, we’ve been doing our best to make up for the lost time. We went three times this month alone, including on my birthday.

A different kind of ‘bliss station’

I read this great prompt by Hollie Petit, Ph.D:

It sounded like such a great idea. So, I took some time to reflect on how to create my bliss station — this is a purposeful place where a person can strive to be their creative best — a place of inspiration. I didn’t have such a thing set up yet, I told myself.

After thinking about it more though, I realized I already had a pretty sweet bliss station already.

In the morning, when it’s nice and cool and the sun hasn’t began it’s beat down for the day, I sit out on our balcony porch. I chat with my husband, sip my coffee, eat a little breakfast maybe and then I get down to writing.

My husband has become quite the green thumb since we came here. All the plants you see were patiently and lovingly cultivated by him (Miracle Grow helps, too). He’s made a lot of progress in just a few months.

Occasionally, I look up to see cars go by on the street in front of our house. Off to the far right is one of those sneaky-devil type speedbumps. It looks harmless, but if a person doesn’t drive over it just right, it can cause a person’s car to do crazy things. Seriously, people are constantly scraping up their cars on that speedbump and one day a girl even broke down.

Speeding through a residential neighborhood is really not a good idea! On many levels and for many reasons!

  • Often I listen to music, either classical or jazz — Chopin is my favorite, but I also listen to a lot of others.
  • I avoid websites with juicy story headlines, including Medium, until later in the day. It can be such a time waster in the precious morning hours.
  • On cooler days I will stay out on the porch til noon. On warmer days this might be a little earlier, as I seek the comfort of lovely air-conditioning.
  • I have a little desk in the house. It doesn’t have too many adornments yet although I did place a card and a little birthday gift from my husband there. Since we went to the beach on my birthday, he got the card the next day, lol.
  • I’m hoping along the way I will collect little things here and there and eventually I will have a choice writing space to call my very own. Until then, I’m happy with what I’ve got.
