Everything Fun WRITING PROMPT
Building an inspiring bliss station for creative work

Fun and creativity are inextricably linked. Creativity is usually fun, and fun usually involves creativity. So, could we possibly be more creative and have more fun if we designed a space for these experiences? I think so.
I’m a fan of Austin Kleon, an author of various books and articles about creativity. One of my favorite articles he wrote is titled “The Bliss Station.” In it, he talked about creating a space and the time to cultivate our creativity daily. Kleon was inspired by Joseph Campbell, author of The Power of Myth, who said
“This is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you may find that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen.”
I appreciate that he considers the designated time and space as sacred, that we allow ourselves this gift without interruption or the need to justify or defend our use of this time and space, and that we enter it with a desire to be in whatever way we see fit.
Mason Curry, the author of Daily Rituals, offers up many insights about how many well-known artists have carved our spaces habitually so they could bring their creations to fruition. It’s worth the read because we can learn about what might work or not work in our lives.
The idea of creating a bliss station has always been inspiring to me. Who wouldn’t want to design a space to do creative things? Many of us probably already have an area to do our thing, whatever our thing is. But is our space designed with intention? Does it inspire us?
What would you most want to be surrounded by in your creative space: art, photos, motivational sayings, colorful walls, plants, animals, books, a desk or table, etc. Think about what your ideal space would contain.
On the other hand, being creative doesn’t mean you need to be surrounded by many things. Some may prefer a plain space with fewer distractions.
For this prompt, I invite you to share images or descriptions of your bliss station or what your bliss station would contain. You may not have created such a space yet, but an ideal provides something worthwhile to work toward achieving.
To clarify, though, creating a bliss station is not just about the stuff we put around us. It also includes the type of intentions we hold while being in a particular space. For example, many creative people choose to enter their bliss station with no technology — no phones, internet, or other distractions. Some people even resist a set location and opt for various places in nature or social places like a coffee shop. When space does not allow a fixed location, some people designate an area of their home for a temporary bliss station like a kitchen table once the kids go to school.
Any area is acceptable as long as it inspires us. This prompt aims to get us seriously thinking about how to generate more creativity and fun through the intentional use of specific spaces and times. I eagerly await what you creative people have to say about this meaningful matter.
