Summary

In 2020, the author, Lucy (The Eggcademic), found structure in routine, leading to personal growth in writing, cooking, and relationships, inspired by Melissa Bee's "Age of Empathy" prompt #2: A Meaningful End.

Abstract

The author reflects on the year 2020 as a period characterized by repetition that fostered a sense of rhythm and routine. Through dedicated time for writing each morning, Lucy crafted her thoughts into poetry. In the realm of food, she mastered basic cooking skills, enabling her to create enjoyable meals economically. The year also brought about a reconnection with an online community of writers and old friends, through regular virtual interactions. Amidst the chaos, the established routines served as the "bare bones" of her accomplishments. Lucy acknowledges the privilege of using the isolation period for self-improvement and calls for actions to make such opportunities more accessible as a basic human right.

Twenty-twenty: in repetition I found rhythm, routine.

In writing, I built a space in my schedule to reflect and journal each morning; and found a space to regularly chisel those random orbs of thoughts into intricate interesting knick-knacks tied up in a nice fat bow for others to read as poetry.

In food, I mastered the basics of the one thing that brings me the most joy, so that I could regularly build scrumptious meals without needing to break the bank.

In connection, not only did I find an amazing sphere of writers, I reconnected with old friends far more regularly whether in weekly game nights or daily mundane texts.

When all else fell apart, all that was left were the bare bones, a repeating structure that gives rise to all else beyond.

Thank you to Melissa Bee for her AoE prompt # 2: A Meaningful End!

Lucy (The Eggcademic) [she/her] recognizes that it’s an immense privilege to have taken this time in isolation for self-improvement, rather than focusing on how to survive through this time. If you, too, were in this kind of privilege, join me in making decisions and actions that make this less of a privilege and more of a basic human right.
