Abstract

The upcoming 7.00 update for the PlayStation 5, scheduled for release on March 8th, 2023, will bring two major features to the console. The first is the long-awaited full integration with Discord, allowing for enhanced communication between players on PlayStation and other platforms. The second feature is the ability to stream PS5 games via the cloud, a service that will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. While the public beta version of the update will not initially include Discord integration, it will focus on testing the cloud streaming functionality. This update is a significant step in Sony's strategy to integrate PlayStation Network with Discord, following their partnership announced in May 2021. The integration is expected to mirror the capabilities available on Xbox consoles since September 2022, where users can join Discord servers and use voice communication directly from their console. The PlayStation 5’s 7.00 update, set to be released on March 8th, 2023, will introduce two significant features to the console:

  • Full Discord integration
  • The ability to stream PS5 games via the cloud

This was reported by Insider Gaming, with a public beta version of the update expected to arrive in the coming days.

However, the beta version will not include the Discord integration feature for testing and will instead focus on the new ability to stream PS5 games via the cloud.

The streaming feature is said to be exclusive to members of PlayStation Plus Premium, the most expensive tier of the revamped PlayStation Plus.

Sony has had a goal of closely linking the PlayStation and Discord platforms for some time. In May 2021, Sony’s president and CEO, Jim Ryan, announced a partnership with Discord, stating that their teams were working to connect Discord with the social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network, intending to bring the two platforms closer together.

Currently, PlayStation users can link their Discord accounts and display their PSN ID on their Discord profile, which also displays when PS4 or PS5 games are being played.

It’s not yet clear how Discord integration will function on the PS5, but it’s assumed it will be similar to how it operates on Microsoft’s Xbox consoles, which received full Discord integration in September 2022 for all users.

On Xbox, users can use Discord for voice communication and even join Discord servers directly from their console.

I’ve been playing games on my PC with my friends who own consoles for a while, and until now, it’s been difficult for my friends who were forced to use Discord on their phones or laptops.

This is an essential quality-of-life feature that I’m sure many PlayStation players are extremely happy about.
