The 3 Eights
Life is all about balance and this might just be the key

I have spent most of my life searching for balance. Then I found it, the three 8’s.
This simple yet profound idea divides the day into three equal parts: eight hours of sleep, eight hours of work, and eight hours dedicated to yourself and those around you.
Here’s how embracing this transformed my life.
The Foundation: Sleep
The first of the Three Eights emphasizes the undeniable importance of sleep. Sleep is frequently sacrificed for productivity and as much else as you can think of.
However, it cannot be understated as to sleep’s critical role in our health, well-being, and even our effectiveness. Sleep rejuvenates the body, sharpens the mind, and stabilizes emotions, laying a solid foundation for the day ahead.
Sleep is not just a period of inactivity; it’s a vital process during which our bodies repair, our brains consolidate memories, and our energy reserves are replenished. Now, not everyone needs 8 hours. For me, this has been the absolute sweet spot.
The Pursuit: Work
The second segment is dedicated to work. This isn’t limited to a 9–5 because you could be working for yourself. This encompasses any form of productive effort, including education, a 9–5, or volunteer work. The key to this eight-hour period is purposeful engagement. Immersing yourself in tasks that not only contribute to your livelihood but also to our sense of accomplishment.
However, the emphasis on work should not be confused with overwork. The Three Eights taught me that, while significant, is just one-third of our day. It’s essential to approach our work with intensity and focus, allowing us to achieve more in less time. By setting clear goals, minimizing distractions, and prioritizing, we can make the most of these eight hours, leaving room for the final and probably most important part.
The Balance: You
The final eight hours are perhaps the most overlooked yet the most important. This time is reserved for you, for nurturing relationships with family and friends. It’s a period for hobbies, relaxation, exercising, creating and interaction. This part of the day is crucial for our mental health, offering us a sense of being.
Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment recharges our soul. Whether it’s reading, exercising, cooking, or simply spending time with people, these hours ensure that our lives are not solely defined by work and sleep. They remind us of the joy of living and the importance of connection.
Achieving Balance
The Three Eights aren’t set in stone and can be tailored to your specific needs to help you achieve balance.
The essence of this philosophy lies in its emphasis on equilibrium — ensuring that no single aspect of our lives overwhelms the others.
To integrate the Three Eights into your life, we must be mindful of how we allocate our time. It requires discipline to adhere to a sleep schedule, focus during work hours, and having enough time and energy for the last and most important part. You.
Learn how to say ‘no’ to excessive work, setting boundaries, and prioritizing activities that align with who you are and where you want to be.
In Short
Life is difficult and time is precious.
Focus on what is important and ignore what isn’t.
