The $1 Trial for Xbox Game Pass Is, Unfortunately, Gone

Microsoft is removing the $1 trial for the Xbox game pass.

Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing its popular $1 Game Pass Ultimate trial that gave players access to over 100 games in the PC and Xbox Game Pass libraries for a month.

The decision comes after the company fell short of its targets for subscriber growth for two consecutive years, prompting it to evaluate different marketing promotions for new members in the future.

Microsoft has not revealed why it decided to retire the $1 trial after years of availability. The Verge reported that the company said it is “evaluating different marketing promotions for new members in the future.”

The trial may be replaced by another scheme designed to lure players into subscribing to the full Game Pass service, which costs $15/£11 per month.

It remains unclear why the $1 trial has been discontinued, but it could be that it no longer serves its purpose of tempting players into trying out the service before locking them in for months or years.

Microsoft may be looking to reorient its strategy around a new offer that it hopes will be more effective in retaining subscribers.

Moreover, Microsoft operates in a different landscape than when the $1 Game Pass trial was introduced. The service broke 25 million subscribers in January 2022, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer noted that its console growth has slowed “because at some point you’ve reached everybody on console that wants to subscribe.”

With the aim of hitting its targets, Microsoft has had to make some changes to its approach, and this includes discontinuing the $1 Game Pass trial.

The $1 Game Pass trial has been a popular offer for many gamers who have enjoyed multiple trials in the past. However, Microsoft’s decision to retire from the trial may not come as a surprise, given that the company has fallen short of its subscriber growth targets for two years in a row.

If the company wants to get back to hitting its targets, it will need to make some changes to its approach, and it appears that discontinuing the $1 Game Pass trial is one of them.

While Microsoft has not revealed what alternative offer it has in store for gamers, it clearly wants to crack down on the multiple $1 trials that some players have enjoyed in the past.

It remains to be seen whether the new offer will be as appealing as the old one, but Microsoft will undoubtedly be working hard to come up with something that will tempt players to subscribe to the full Game Pass service.

Final Words

Microsoft’s decision to discontinue the $1 Game Pass trial may come as a disappointment to some gamers who have enjoyed the offer in the past.

However, the company’s decision is likely due to its falling short of its subscriber growth targets for two years in a row.

While Microsoft has not revealed its plans for an alternative offer, it is clear that the company will be working hard to come up with something that will tempt players to subscribe to the full Game Pass service.

Ultimately, gamers will have to wait and see what Microsoft has in store for them.
