Thanks to AI, Photoshop Received a Significant New Feature
Adobe Firefly is a new generative AI built into the native app.

In some of my previous chats, I’ve talked about all sorts of cool stuff related to editing photos and videos. You can find the links to those discussions down below.
Today, I want to dive into why Photoshop is like the big cheese of photo editing software and give you the lowdown on its awesome new feature called Adobe Firefly. So, let’s get right into it.
Why is Photoshop most people's first choice?
Ah, Photoshop! It’s like the Swiss Army knife of image editing tools, and for many people, it’s the go-to choice when it comes to manipulating and enhancing digital images. So, why is Photoshop most people’s first choice? Well, let me break it down for you.
First things first, Photoshop has been around for ages. It’s practically a legend in the realm of image editing software. It was first released in 1990, and since then, it has undergone numerous updates and enhancements, constantly evolving to meet the needs of its users. Its long history has earned it a solid reputation and established it as a reliable and trusted tool in the creative community.
One of the critical reasons why Photoshop reigns supreme is its versatility. It’s like a digital playground for your creative ideas. Photoshop has something for everyone, whether you’re a professional graphic designer, a budding photographer, or simply someone who loves to tinker with images.
From basic adjustments like cropping and resizing to complex tasks like layering, retouching, and compositing, this software has a wide range of features that can handle almost any image editing challenge you throw at it.
Speaking of features, Photoshop boasts an impressive arsenal of tools. The sheer depth and breadth of its functionality can be mind-boggling at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that there’s little you can’t accomplish.
You’ve got your selection tools for isolating specific areas, your brush and clone stamp for painting and copying, your adjustment layers for fine-tuning colors and tones, and the list goes on. It’s like having a magic wand at your disposal, allowing you to transform ordinary images into extraordinary works of art.
Another reason why Photoshop is a top pick is its seamless integration with other Adobe Creative Cloud applications. If you’re a part of the creative industry, chances are you’re already familiar with other Adobe products like Illustrator, InDesign, or Premiere Pro.
Seamlessly moving files and assets between these applications is a game-changer. Need to create a design in Illustrator and then fine-tune it in Photoshop? No problem! This software’s smooth workflow and interoperability make it easier for professionals to bring their creative visions to life.
Let’s not forget the vast wealth of resources available for Photoshop users. Thanks to its popularity, there is a vibrant and thriving community of Photoshop enthusiasts. You’ll find many learning materials and inspiration to fuel your creativity, from online tutorials and forums to YouTube channels and dedicated websites.
Whether you’re a beginner trying to grasp the basics or an experienced user looking to master advanced techniques, there’s always something new to discover and learn from the Photoshop community.
And hey, let’s not overlook the power of brand recognition. Adobe has done an incredible job of establishing Photoshop as the gold standard in image editing software. When people think of photo manipulation or graphic design, Photoshop is often the first name that comes to mind. This brand recognition gives it an edge over its competitors, as it is seen as a mark of quality and professionalism.
Finally, there’s a certain sense of prestige associated with using Photoshop. It has become synonymous with skilled craftsmanship and artistic prowess. Being proficient in Photoshop is like having a secret superpower that sets you apart from the average Joe.
It’s no wonder that many professionals and hobbyists alike gravitate towards it, as it offers the tools they need and a sense of belonging to a community of passionate creatives.
Photoshop’s long-standing reputation, versatility, powerful features, seamless integration, extensive resources, brand recognition, and sense of prestige make it the first choice for many.
Whether you’re retouching a portrait, designing a poster, or creating mind-bending digital art, Photoshop has got your back. It’s no wonder it continues to be the reigning champion of the image editing world.
What is Adobe Firefly?
Adobe Photoshop is about to level up with a brand-new tool powered by some seriously cool AI technology. Say hello to Generative Fill! This snazzy feature allows you to work your magic on images by extending them and adding or removing objects, all with the help of simple text prompts. How awesome is that?
Generative Fill is part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications, and it’s one of the first to use Adobe’s AI image generator, Firefly. This fantastic tool was initially released as a web-only beta version in March, but now it’s officially launching in beta within Photoshop.
But wait, there’s more! Adobe has promised a full release of Generative Fill in Photoshop later this year. So get ready to take your image editing skills to the next level!
So, how does Generative Fill work? Well, it functions just like any other regular tool in Photoshop, operating within individual layers of an image file.
If you want to expand an image's borders (also known as outpainting) or generate new objects, Generative Fill gives you three nifty options to choose from. And here’s a cool tip: if you leave the prompt blank, the system will try to expand the image on its own. But to get the best results, it’s recommended to give it some direction.
Think of it as a souped-up version of Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill feature but with even more control in your hands. I haven’t had a chance to try Generative Fill, but I witnessed a live demonstration, and let me tell you, it’s simultaneously impressive and a bit imperfect.
While some of the objects it generated, like cars and puddles, didn’t blend seamlessly into the image, I was amazed at how well it handled backgrounds and filled in empty spaces. In fact, in some cases, it even mimicked light sources and reflected existing elements of the image in the generated water. Talk about mind-blowing!
Now, for those who are already familiar with AI image generation tools, these feats might not come as a huge surprise. However, the real game-changer is integrating this cutting-edge technology into widely-used apps like Photoshop. That’s what brings these advanced tools to a much broader audience, opening up a world of possibilities for creative minds everywhere.
But hold on. There’s more to Firefly than just its functionality. Adobe has made sure to prioritize the use of legitimate and copyright-compliant training data for this AI model.
They claim that Firefly is only trained on content the company has the right to use, such as Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and copyright-free material.
This is a big deal because it means that anything you create using Generative Fill should be safe to use for commercial purposes. It’s a sigh of relief for creatives and agencies who have been cautious about using AI tools due to potential legal complications.
And here’s another neat feature: Generative Fill supports Content Credentials, which act like a “nutrition label” system for images. It attaches attribution data to the photos, letting viewers know if the content was created or edited using AI.
Ashley Still, the Senior Vice President of Digital Media at Adobe, shared some exciting insights about Firefly’s integration into creative workflows. She stated the following:
“By integrating Firefly directly into workflows as a creative co-pilot, Adobe is accelerating ideation, exploration, and production for all of our customers. Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations.”
Although Generative Fill isn’t available in the full release of Photoshop just yet, don’t despair. You can actually try it out today by downloading the desktop beta app or accessing it as a module within the Firefly beta app.
Adobe has also announced that we can expect a full release of Generative Fill in the public Photoshop app sometime in the second half of 2023. So mark your calendars and get ready to unleash your creativity!
Adobe has been on a roll, injecting AI-powered tools into its products for quite some time now. In fact, at Adobe Max last year, they introduced some fantastic Photoshop features, like higher-quality object selections powered by Sensei, another one of Adobe’s unique AI models. And that’s not all — Firefly has already found a home in Adobe Illustrator, where it’s used to recolor vector-based images.
Oh, and guess what? Adobe has also hinted at integrating Firefly with Adobe Express, their cloud-based design platform that rivals services like Canva. However, we’re still waiting for official confirmation on when that exciting release will happen.
Final Words
Adobe is taking image editing to a whole new level with Generative Fill.
So get ready to let your imagination run wild and create stunning visuals with the help of AI technology.
With Adobe leading the way, the future of creative possibilities is brighter than ever!
