Summary

The future of Medium is envisioned to include more personalized and authentic content through Author-Generated Images (AGI) and writer-to-writer interviews, enhancing reader engagement and connection.

Abstract

The article posits that the future of Medium lies in a shift towards more genuine and relatable content, where authors use real-time, personal images (AGI) instead of generic stock photos. This change aims to provide a more intimate reading experience, allowing readers to better connect with the author's narrative. The piece suggests that readers are often disconnected by irrelevant stock images and that authors struggle to find suitable visuals on platforms like Unsplash. By incorporating AGI, writers can share their unique perspectives and experiences directly, fostering a stronger bond with their audience. Additionally, the future of Medium writing may include 'wordcasts'—written interviews between authors, offering a new form of content that caters to readers who prefer text over audio or video. This approach not only adds a personal touch but also provides a platform for writers to engage with each other's work more deeply.

Opinions

  • The current use of stock images from platforms like Unsplash is often ineffective and disconnected from the article's content, leading to reader confusion.
  • Authors are encouraged to use personal, real-time images (AGI) to provide a more authentic and engaging reading experience.
  • There is a desire among readers for a personal touch and a sense of connection with the authors behind the articles.
  • The concept of 'wordcasts' or written interviews is introduced as a future trend in Medium content, offering a new way for authors to interact and for readers to consume interviews in their preferred format.
  • The article suggests that AGI and wordcasts will enhance the medium of writing by making it more personal, relatable, and engaging for both writers and readers.

One of the future of Medium is that authors and writers take real-time pictures of their experiences and insert them into their articles. Instead of using boring generated images from Unsplash that most of us suck at (I’ll explain shortly) and AI robots from all over the world.

When I say most of us suck — here’s what I mean. As a reader, how often do you open an article and are confused about what that image has to do with the article? And as a writer, how often do you try to find an image via Unsplash to fit your idea of the article and find nothing, so you settle for a whack one?

Exactly!

Readers would want a personal touch and feel as they read articles.

A quote by Mike Sansone comes to mind:

“At our core, we all want to laugh, be listened to, and want to be loved”

And may I add, more than anything:

we want to connect!

Readers want to see what you do outside of Medium, who you hang out with, your dog (like Ryan Canady), and the cave where you write from, just like how Melissa Billeaud used her images in this article:

Readers want to know who the author behind the words is.

And how do we achieve this? By resorting to what I’d like to tag:

Author-Generated Images (AGI)

In the same way, I took this picture below at Starbucks (while writing this article)— in a bid to write from a different space:

I need strong coffee suggestions that’ll get my creative juices high. Any ideas?

Another future of medium writing is writers interviewing other writers. Not ONLY Medium but across all writing platforms. We’ll be seeing lots of wordcasts (podcasts but in words).

Wordcasts, textcasts, whatever cast you want to call it, but the idea is to interview authors, fellow writers, or exciting people across the internet. But reading a podcast-style interview, you know, is the future of medium writing and writing in general.

Ciaran Callam & Teri Nickels’ Straight Shot have given us a template to follow here:

This approach can bring a personal touch to the interaction while catering to readers who prefer WRITTEN content.

As a writer, you can interview your old or younger self. I mean, your future self interviewing your past or older self. ) Oops! Did I give someone a weird idea🫣)

I hope I’ve been able to convince you and not to confuse you that the future of Medium is AGI (Author generated Images)?
