PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Summer Vibes and Family Duties

Week 44 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

I feel like summer has finally arrived. Despite still getting rains the temperatures are remarkably higher and the sun is stronger. Flowers are blooming in their brightest colors and the grass is lush green.

I’ve spent this week working under a cloudy sky, I went on a walk, and visited my grandma to stay a few days with her. She’s 91 and after the latest events, she can’t be left alone in her apartment anymore.

This shot was taken without noticing the butterfly. Once I checked the preview of the image I only spotted the creature. But when I wanted to take another picture with the butterfly in focus he was gone.

© Bonfert — 04/06/2021 — LUSH GREEN

Summer in Germany means lush green grass and meadows as far as the eye can see. I love the contrast between the green and the blue of the sky.

After writing the post on neighbors and my neighborhood I saw these cats sitting on the window sill of our neighbors' house. The black one always stands in that window. Always. Every day.

© Bonfert — 06/06/2021 — GLORY

It’s the first rose of the season. Or let’s say the first one I recognized as such and captured her. Right on our terrace is she growing and blooming in full glory. Already last year did she make me smile when displaying her beauty.

Today we left our little fairytale village to drive to my grandma. For the next three days, we’ll be over there. Looking after and spending time with her.

Despite her age, she’s still very fit in her brain and won the first round of Rummikub. Of course. She always did. She never lost on purpose to prevent her grandchildren from crying. She taught us from a young age, how to lose. And that you’ll win sometimes and other times you lose.

My husband and I went for a walk through the city. The town my grandma is living in is larger than a village but does not appear as a city.

Several farmhouses are located in the center of town. Right next to modern offices and bank buildings. I love the old-school vibe of it. And while admiring all those old buildings we walked past several beautiful gardens.

One of them was blooming and shining in various colors. Poppy flowers with flower heads larger than my hand were attracting my attention. But then there was another flower taking that attention away.

My plant identifier app describes them as “Iris Variegata”.

Wednesday is market day. We knew my grandma always used to walked there by herself carrying all the goods in a trolley behind her on the way back. But now my husband said it’s a far walk for her and asked her if we should take the car.

She responded prompt with an energetic voice and in English to him “no, walking!” There is your answer.

My grandma didn’t learn English in school or at work. But when her daughter moved to the States and she was about to visit her she said she cannot visit a country without speaking its language.

With 60 years, she started learning English on the TV and later took classes for several years in an adult education center. I am still impressed by how well she can speak and express herself. My husband understands German well enough but she always tries to talk to him in English. And does it remarkably well!

This has been my week in photographs. 7 days. 7 photographs. Anyone can join. Once. Or weekly. It doesn’t matter. We welcome everyone! Dennett was the one starting this photography challenge sometime last year and many have participated ever since.
