Summary

The article discourages writers on Medium from publishing stats reports, emphasizing the importance of providing valuable content to readers instead of just sharing earnings and writing metrics.

Abstract

The author of the article admits to previously writing stats reports but has since shifted focus to delivering value through content. The article criticizes the trend of Medium writers publishing viral but low-value stats reports, which often include screenshots of earnings and goals. These reports create an "infinite loop of no-value content," leading readers to seek value elsewhere. The author argues that true writing success comes from offering genuine insights and solutions, not just financial achievements. Writers are encouraged to produce content that helps readers improve their lives or writing skills, rather than contributing to the cycle of "useless hope" that stats reports perpetuate. The author also warns against purchasing e-books from writers who solely share their stats, as these may not provide real value. Instead, readers are advised to follow writers who aim to help and teach through their work.

Opinions

  • Stats reports on Medium are deemed to be of low value, as they lack actionable advice and insights for readers seeking to improve their writing.
  • The popularity of stats reports is seen as a viral trend that does not contribute to the reader's growth or knowledge.
  • Writers who focus on sharing their earnings and stats are accused of giving readers "useless hope" and are discouraged from selling e-books that may not offer genuine value.
  • The author believes that writing should be about providing value, whether through entertainment or practical advice, and that this is what readers are actually paying for on platforms like Medium.
  • The article suggests that writers should aim to help readers solve problems and control emotions through their writing, which is the true essence of writing.
  • The author promotes their own newsletter and Medium account as resources that provide valuable information and a free writing course, emphasizing growth and improvement rather than mere popularity.

Stop Writing Stats Reports. That’s Not What Your Reader Wants.

Or you will fail on Medium

I’m also guilty of writing earning and stats reports. But it’s been a while since I’ve stopped doing it.

Every time open my medium feed I see earning/writing reports. I open them and it’s the same thing over and over again:

Writers are sharing their stats and earnings without giving any value.

Have you ever thought why are these articles so viral?

Giving useless hope

People open them (writing reports) and read in the hope of finding how they can improve their writing and how they should write better to achieve more.

But instead of getting value, they see the same picture over and over again. Screenshots from stats, next goal, next screenshot, etc…

It’s an infinite loop of no-value content. The writer is writing his stats report — other writers who want to improve are reading them — they find no value and move on reading other reports.

As they see that stats reports are doing well they are writing their stat report…Some writers are living writing only about their stats.

The worst of this — these writers are selling you their “e-books”.

But should you be buying them?

No.

Unless you want to read how they are earning money by writing ‘stats reports’ you shouldn’t waste your time and money on them.

Read real writers who are trying to help you if you want to become better.

Writers who are writing only about their writing reports are giving you useless hope.

Give real value instead

If you want to build a loyal audience write and give value. You are the person who has the value so give it.

Writing is giving value.

That’s why so many people are paying for the Medium membership. They are in search of value.

So give them it.

I love reading about relationships and how I can improve them because it helps me in my personal life. I can apply what I’m reading.

Writing can also entertain. It’s up to you to choose.

I prefer giving value. This is an example of an article with value :

I help people improve their writing by giving them value. Not only showing off my stats and screaming on every corner “I’m popular without adding any value”.

Writing is about emotions. The writer helps solve problems because he is the one controlling emotions through his writing and helping the reader to do so.
