The anatomy of +$200 per article

Secrets to unveil

Photo by Helena Lopes on Unsplash

I’ve been reviewing my work lately.

I’ve got a list of articles that have made over $200. I plan to review those articles to see the commonalities in them to leverage the lesson and do more of what works.

This time I’ll analyze this $200 article.

Let’s dive in.

1. Tell facts

People, even writers are sometimes afraid to tell the truth. This story is about how people are quitting Medium (And not only Medium, it applies to every area of our lives).

If you put your words on problems people are facing they will be interested in reading those words.

Share what others keep for themselves.

2. I spoke honestly about failure

Failing is part of your life and no one is safe from it. I failed a lot and saw people failing. I’m not afraid of talking about failure even if nowadays people only love to share their wins.

But by failing we learn so we should more often be writing about failure than wins, writing about what we shouldn't do.

This article has done well because I’m helping people to not fail by highlighting the reason for their failure.

3. Mass appeal

It’s not a “niched” story. This article is as wide as you can go. Every single person on the platform is concerned. Whether it’s a new/experienced writer or a reader who will consider becoming a writer.

So the market is enormous.

It serves thousands of people on Medium. Most writers won’t tell you this because they want you to fail.

Why?

To kill competition.

But me — I’m here to help you.

4. It sparks curiosity

The title is everything. I’ve said that a million times in my previous stories. Imagine if your story earned $1 then the title earned is $0.8. The major part of the work (around 80%) is the title.

The title is the reason your reader is clicking on your story. The rest is simple — keep him reading.

I’ve added numbers in my title. They are crucial to spark curiosity:

This Is Why 95% of Writers Quit Medium In The First Month.

Master titles. They are so crucial I even prepared 7 lessons on them for my upcoming free writing course.
