Spreading Kindness Using Post-it Notes

A lovely way to brighten up someone’s day

“The point is not to pay back kindness but to pass it on.” — Julia Alvarez

During our recent visit to a charming local business, we had the pleasure of exploring their delightful collection of locally made and inspired products, as well as lifestyle gifts for the home.

As we were about to conclude our visit, something caught my eye — a bulletin board adorned with colorful Post-it Notes, each representing an act of paying it forward.

The establishment encourages customers to purchase a cup of coffee or a scoop of ice cream for a fellow visitor, leaving their generous gesture documented on a Post-it Note placed on the board.

It was heartwarming to witness the board adorned with an abundance of these small acts of kindness.

While it is possible that some individuals may feel a sense of pride or hesitation in utilizing these notes, the initiative itself is undeniably a wonderful means of spreading goodwill and perpetuating the idea of paying it forward.

Ways to give back during the holiday season

  • Bake cookies or brownies for your neighbors and deliver them to their houses.
  • Pay for the person in front of you in the drive-thru line at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts.
  • Distribute coupons for items you won’t use to other customers as they enter the store. Several years ago, I remember a woman handing me a coupon after exiting a Kohl’s store.
  • Make “blessing bags” to give to homeless people you meet on your daily commute. These include necessities such as water bottles, toothpaste, and other items. To make these bags, save all of the travel size samples from hotel rooms and Airbnbs. At her college, my daughter made blessing bags to donate to the homeless.
  • Donate any remaining funds on debit gift cards to go fund me sites.
  • Allow another vehicle to merge into your lane.
  • Allow someone to cut in front of you in line at the store.
  • Offer to photograph a couple or family.
  • Assist someone who appears to be in need.
  • Write and mail holiday cards to senior citizens.

Can you think of other ways to spread goodwill during the holiday season? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
