TRAVEL/KINDNESS OF STRANGERS/THIS HAPPENED TO ME
An Unexpected Surprise on a Hiking Trip
We might not have reached the summit if not for the kind strangers

“How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it!” — George Elliston
My family and I were on holiday in the Texas Hill Country and wanted to take in the scenery at a local state park.
We did not have our hiking shoes with us or even good athletic shoes, for that matter.
We were also neither appropriately dressed for hiking nor did we have water for hydration.
Nonetheless, we decided on the spur of the moment to hike up the summit trail.
Encounter with the Friendly Strangers
The humidity outside ensured we were drenched in sweat within the first ten minutes. This trail was not for the faint of heart and was fairly steep for novice hikers like us.
We stopped a couple of times to catch our breath and to take in the beautiful views.
About halfway up the summit, we encountered a friendly young couple. We greeted each other with a smile and a wave.
They advised us to drink water as it got hot at the summit and inquired if we needed water bottles. I was not about to refuse their offer, considering how I was ready to pass out from heatstroke.
We gratefully accepted the water bottles they handed us from their backpack cooler and went along our merry way.
The temperature on that day easily surpassed the 100-degree mark. Texas summers are sweltering, and hiking up a rock in the middle of summer could have turned into a dreadful experience.

Final Thoughts
We later learned that there had been many rescues on this summit.
Apparently, people had gotten to the top, exhausted, dehydrated, and thoroughly drained of their energy.
The picturesque view and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit made the arduous hike worthwhile.
Thanks to the kind couple, we were able to complete our hike that day safely.
