“Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

It was the summer of 2003. My family and I were living as American ex-pats in Yokohama, Japan.

I was window shopping with my baby daughter along the quaint Yokohama Motomachi shopping street. I fondly remember Motomachi being one of my favorite shopping areas in Yokohama.

There was something to please everyone with a variety of both traditional and modern shops and a fair sprinkling of bakeries and cafes (if you needed refreshment or rest).

Japanese Businessman

I was enjoying a leisurely walk while pushing my baby daughter in her stroller when we encountered a long, steep flight of stairs.

I hesitated at the bottom of the steps, pondering how I would ascend them.

Then, this Japanese man dressed in a business suit appeared out of nowhere. Without even so much as a casual glance in my direction, he swooped up the stroller with my baby, carried it all the way up the steps, and set it gently down.

I was beyond surprised and thanked him for the kind gesture. He nodded in my direction and left in a hurry — a busy man going about his day, stopping only to help out a young mother in need.

Takeaway

What makes some people more helpful than others?

Some people will just walk by a stranger in need without giving a second thought to helping them out. Yet, others will immediately come to their assistance, almost as if it is ingrained in their DNA.

All I know is that I was grateful that day that a complete stranger went out of his way to help me. I honestly do not know how I would have managed to take my baby and her stroller up the long flight of stairs.

This unexpected kindness from someone I did not know is something I will never forget.

Sometimes you will find kindness in the most unexpected places.
