Sometimes We Are blinded By Our Prejudices

With an open mind, we can be nicely surprised

I was reviewing the submissions to ILLUMINATION-Curated today. As usual, we received many high-quality stories. Never dull moments when dealing with this curated collection!

The first thing to look at in a story for me is the title. Like many readers, I don’t like clickbait, especially on Medium. It is desired and works on some other platforms, but it is another story.

When I hesitantly clicked on an article by Patrick M. Ohana, my first impression was: “Here we go, another clickbait! Should I really waste my time reviewing this article?”.

As an editor, I have no choice. I review every article submitted to my publications. Sometimes it is painful, but most of the time, my reviews give me great pleasure, open my mind, and broaden my perspective. Even the pain is good pain.

While wearing my editor hat during the reviews, I also look at the stories from the readers’ perspective. I always ask myself two questions:

If I were the reader of this story, would I like it?

Would this story add any value to me?

After hesitantly opening Patrick’s story, I started reviewing it. To my surprise, I instantly got hooked. The story was not only excellent from the editorial standards viewpoint but also satisfied my reader's expectation.

As Charlotte Brontë says, “Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.

I learned to get rid of my prejudices one story at a time, thanks to great writers like Patrick. Storytelling is an attractive art to me.
