Sometimes Travel Plans Don’t Work Out
And you just have to walk away.
I know it’s shameful that as an editor of Globetrotters, I am using an Unsplash photo as my lead photo. We always encourage writers to use their own photos whenever possible.
However, at this particular moment, I don’t have a picture of the place that I want to talk about because we haven’t gotten there yet.
The above photo is of a place in Turkey called Cappadocia. Because I don’t tend to research places much, I haven’t looked too far into the details about Cappadocia, other than to browse a few photos that occasionally pop up on my Instagram feed. But out of all the recommendations that I have received from people who have already been to Turkey, they say, “You MUST go to Cappadocia!”
So, it was on this return trip that we decided that it must be.
We are currently staying in Antalya, Turkey and have been here for a month now. We are about an 8–10 hour bus ride away from Cappadocia and initially thought that we would travel there from here for a 3-night trip at some point.
Because Antalya is right on the Mediterranean Sea, we have been enjoying temperatures of between 16 and 20C most days. Even when it has been raining, which it did for most of last week, it was quite mild.
So when I checked the weather in Cappadocia last week, I was horrified to see that it was just 2C!

Ummmmm…….no thanks!
You may wonder what sort of wimpy Canadians we are when we decided that Cappadocia was too cold for us to visit. The truth is that we are VERY wimpy!
We have spent most of the past 5 years in tropical climates, and our desire to experience cold weather is pretty much nil.
Besides that, we don’t have the clothing for cold weather. We would literally be hiding in our hotel or hostel for our time there, and we just aren’t into that. If we are to go to a place like Cappadocia, we want to be able to hike around and see the sights. That’s how we truly get a feel for a place and learn the lay of the land.
So yeah, as I said in my article Reasons Why Turkey Should Be On Your Bucket List, it will just have to wait for a better time when the weather isn’t so damn cold! We are thinking that spring or fall will be a better time to avoid the crowds.
Another spot that we vowed we would visit is Pamukkale.
Pamukkale is a rare natural phenomenon that is only replicated in one other place on earth, Oaxaca, Mexico. Interestingly enough, we spent three weeks in Oaxaca in 2018, yet we never did visit this similar sight. So when I learned that there are only two like it in the world, I, of course, kicked myself for not going to it in Oaxaca, then vowed that we would see the one in Turkey.
However, it too is located higher up in elevation and though the temperatures are a few degrees warmer than Cappadocia these days, it is still too cold for us to truly enjoy it.

So here we are! Two places that we vowed we would see this time in Turkey, and two places that we won’t.
This is the reality of this type of travel. We don’t plan where we go based on the weather or the seasons, other than we try to stay in warm places for the winters.
If we get to a place and we get to see the things we wanted to, that’s great. But if we don’t, we must remember that these places are not going anywhere.
We love Turkey a lot and we know that we will certainly be back someday.
Happy travels!
