Abstract

Some of the Best Articles I Read This Week (#9)

Brilliant stories from my recent Medium reading

Hello! I normally publish these lists at the weekend, but yesterday I was busy setting up a new publication: Choose your own adventure–collaboration. Find out more here.

I didn’t want want to spam my email subscribers’ inboxes beyond the four new stories that came out yesterday 😵‍💫 Sorry guys.

Anyway, better late that never… Here are my best finds from the last week or so from Medium. As ever, there were many cool stories to choose from. I often focus on writing-related articles, but as I have been reading so many creative stories in the past week, let’s go with some of those.

If you want to discover some exciting new voices in fiction and creative non-fiction, read on.

First off, the ‘curiouser and curiouser’ dreamlike short story “Zoom”, by F. Leonora Solomon:

Zoom is described as ‘based on a truish story’. Likewise, this piece by Jen North is both story and reflection — and it made me chuckle:

Getting deeper into the realms of fiction, this fast-paced story by Timothy J. Sabo made me laugh… and write a follow-up of my own! It’s the first instalment of the ‘Top Ten Stories’ project:

I don’t normally share my own stories in these lists, but here is my follow up to Timothy’s piece. It’s probably necessary to understanding the one that follows…

…and the follow-up story is the one below by Logan Silkwood. I love what Logan did here! Overall, Tom’s having a rough time across these stories, and I’m looking forward to finding out what comes next!

Moving on, I’m intrigued by the potential of Medium for web-novels and series, and this piece by Jonathon Sawyer is a good example. Currently there are 30 episodes available — a lot to explore. And it’s based on a D&D campaign, which makes me like it even better!

At the other end of the length spectrum, I was really impressed by this prose poem by J. J. Anderson:

Finally, to get back to those choose your own adventure stories

A lot of people seem to remember the books with fond nostalgia, and it has been great to see the response to this collaborative writing project so far. I couldn’t choose between the starter stories by Novus Grey and Samuel Kenneth Kauffman, so here are both of them. Please consider following the publication!

I’ll leave it there for now. What have you been reading this week? And have you discovered any poets or fiction authors on Medium whose work you’d like to share? If so, let me know in the comments, and I’ll feature them in a future list.

Happy reading :)
