2021 was quite the year for everyone. We all came into this year fresh with the trauma of 2020 and hoped that we would be further along in the COVID fight than we are. However, for me, 2021 brought a few upsides, including focus, understanding, and a new appreciation for life.

As I plan my self-care goals for the upcoming year, I strive for more balance, improved mood, and an overall increased level of happiness. I’ve been researching various 2022 wellness trends and decided to incorporate a few into my routine. So, what do the wellness deities have in store for us in the new year?

1. Adaptogens and Shrooming For Emotional Wellness

Apparently, emotionally well people can better handle the stress of life. Crazy right?! They are also known to adapt to changes and difficult times more quickly. With the year we’ve had, it is no surprise that people are looking to manage stress effectively.

Wellness trends can expect to see an increase in people searching for stress-relieving solutions. In addition, as anxiety and depression get on the rise, people will want answers. Me, I’m people. I need answers! I’ll dabble with adaptogens next year and look into microdosing with mushrooms. According to data from Sci Rep 11, 22479 (2021), Among individuals reporting mental health concerns, microdosers exhibited lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress across gender. That’s good enough for me. I’ll give it a go.

So what about adaptogens? Adaptogens support the body in dealing with stress. They can help your body adapt to life’s doozies. These herbs aid our bodies in reacting to or recovering from both short- and long-term physical or mental stress. Some also boost immunity and overall wellbeing. Research shows adaptogens can combat fatigue, enhance cognitive performance, ease depression and anxiety, and help you thrive rather than muddle through.

In 2022, we expect to see more natural solutions for stress. Natural products like ginseng, basil, maca, turmeric, and reishi, known as the magic ingredients, will become integrated into my diet. They promote the overall feeling of wellbeing and are also known to help relieve stress.

2. Still Boosting The Immune System (Eye Roll)

This pandemic has made everyone more aware of the importance of a healthy immune system. As a result, we’re all taking more steps to boost our immunity. Eating healthy, getting the proper amount of sleep, and avoiding stress as much as possible have been proven to help. Boosting our immunity will continue to be a hot topic in 2022 and beyond.

3. Catch me outside

2020 and 2021 came with changes to the way people exercise. Crowded gyms and indoor fitness became unsafe and more people turned to activities like hiking. Unfortunately, 2022 may not be much different. With new variants popping up, people will seek outdoor fitness and home routines.

I spent the last year following Caroline Girvan’s Home Youtube Workouts, which transformed my body. I’ll continue her workouts and include 2022 wellness trends like hiking, biking, and swimming. You name it, if it’s outdoors and physical, I’m going to try it.

4. Reducetarianism

What’s reducetarianism? Well, it’s about reducing the impact you leave on the planet. Reducetarianism does this by advocating that we mind what we eat. Climate change is no joke, and eating more plant-based could go a long way. Don’t worry; I won’t have to completely completely completely give up all animal proteins. While it is advised that you reduce intake, you can also be intentional about it. That means eating animal products that are ethical and organic.

I will be very intentional with my grocery shopping and meal prep. My family isn’t fond of leftovers, something they will adapt to next year. The goal is to be less wasteful.2022 will be another year where mindfulness and overall wellbeing are at the forefront.

Let’s Get It 2022

I can’t wait to see how wellness and self-care evolve a year from now. Will shrooms be the answer to my anxiety? Will taking a hike be the answer to yours? I guess we’ll have to take it one mindful moment at a time. So, as you make your resolutions and self-care goals, consider including one from above.
