MEDIUM

Should You Clap To Make Someone Happy?

Here’s why I always give 50 claps

There has always been a clapping debate on Medium. Should you give claps based on how much you like the story or give the maximum number of claps no matter what?

And then if you didn’t like the story, how do you choose between giving 3 claps or 37 claps? Is it a random number?

I give 50 claps no matter what and here’s why. It’s not necessary to make anyone happy. There are deeper reasons for it.

  • It takes a lot of confidence for some writers to put their stories out there for the world to see.
  • When you spend hours trying to perfect a story, receiving one clap isn’t very encouraging.
  • The story may be the writer’s very first published story. It can be a confidence killer to receive so little engagement and support.
  • Clapping shows that you are encouraging and supporting the writer to keep writing.
  • I don’t think anyone is born a great writer. Everyone needs to write to improve. Their first story may not be the best, but they are working to get better at it.

If the story is not great, I think it would be more helpful to leave them a constructive piece of feedback. Let them know why you didn’t like the story.

If you leave one clap and click away, how does the writer improve? All they know is that their story isn’t getting claps for some reason.

I have certainly written bad stories. I cringe at the very first posts I published on Medium. Here is the very first story I ever posted on Medium.

We all write better as we write more. If we shoot someone down and don’t support them when they are learning and practicing, they will never be able to improve.

Writers will certainly appreciate the support and the feedback. As a writer myself, I feel grateful that someone has taken the time to help me improve.

Wouldn’t you feel the same way?

Today, I’d like to close this story by sharing an inspiring story by Sahil Patel. He’s a Top Writer in Poetry, Reading, and Inspiration.

If you enjoy reading about these topics, make sure to check out his collection of stories.

In particular, I really enjoyed the story he wrote here. We all go through life’s ups and downs. Sometimes, it can be difficult to motivate ourselves to write when we’re in a funk.

If you’re in this situation, here are 4 practical ways to write when you are going through a hard time.

P.S. Engagement with other writers is one of the keys to success on Medium. When you leave comments for other writers, they are likely to engage with you too. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Since joining Medium, I’ve been making about $40 a month. If you’d like to boost your engagement and earnings, consider joining Medium to read unlimited articles! It’s $5 per month, which is dirt cheap considering the prices of things now.
