Self-Discipline is The Key to Stay Motivated

Motivation alone doesn’t cut it

Merriam-Webster defines motivation as

“a motivating force, stimulus, or influence”

But what if an external force isn’t there?

What if an outside influence, needed to satisfy motivation’s definition, is nonexistent?

What if there is not a stimulus to incentivize our goals?

Motivation only works if there’s someone or something doing the motivating.

Sometimes our goals are clouded by the hard work that must come first. It’s hard to see the forest through the trees.

The work may intimidate and deter us from taking the steps needed to reach a certain goal.

That’s where self-discipline becomes essential.

Merriam-Webster defines self-discipline as

“correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement”

Unlike motivation, which requires a “push” from an external force, self-discipline is you against you. Do you really want to improve?

Self-discipline is knowing and believing your hard work will result in a fulfillment of your goals.

It’s a continuation of daily habits that will ensure an improvement.

Motivation Propels Self-Discipline

If someone is motivated to start a business, they may tell their friends and mentally desire to become their own boss.

Their friends will motivate them, which provides an external influence. This encourages the individual to follow their dreams.

However, motivation isn’t enough.

Self-discipline must also be present for the improvement to actually work.

The person desiring to improve a certain aspect of their life must regulate themselves to achieve that goal.

But what does this “regulating” look like?

Well, for someone wanting to start a business, this may mean saying no to weekend plans to allow time to start the business.

It may mean ending friendships that no longer motivate you to reach your goals.

Anything that no longer serves you is inhibiting your ability to grow.

Putting yourself first and practicing self-discipline is the fastest way to accomplish your goals. Motivation alone only gets you so far.

That’s why I look at motivation as an applause for the self-discipline at display.

Self-discipline is where the hard work is done, motivation is the encouragement.

Think about exercising: You can’t change your physical appearance in one day, it requires dedication to continue working out. Some days you won’t feel motivated to get dressed, drive to the gym, work out, drive home, shower, etc. Self-discipline is where the magic happens. By knowing this routine will eventually fulfill your goals, self-discipline motivates you to continue exercising.
