Saturn Series: Fourth House or Cancer — Growing Up Fast
The influence of transit or natal Saturn through the signs and houses

Welcome to the fourth article in this Saturn series.
This series will explore how Saturn might show up in your life when it transits the Fourth House or Cancer, or if you have this placement in your birth chart.

Saturn in the Fourth House or Cancer by transit or birth
Saturn in the Fourth House orCancer is like needing to be-your-own-boss vibes.
You are being called to take responsibility for your emotional wellbeing. That might look like getting therapy, reading self-help or personal psychology books, and looking after your fitness and health.
You may also find yourself in the position of having to look after others more than usual, so you will likely up-level in your ability to successfully do this as well. People may come to you for emotional support, and you are being helped with this transit to be able to provide that for them.
Being able to look after yourself is so powerful and so important. It allows you to be a better, stronger version of yourself that can be of more service to your family, friends, and community.
If you have issues with your parents, especially a mother figure, it is now that you will be asked to address those problems and work out ways to move through them so that you are relieved from those emotional traumas.
Women may be particularly important figures at this time, especially older women such as older relatives or community members or those in authoritative positions.
Whatever your gender, you are likely to learn from these important feminine individuals qualities that will help you mature both personally and professionally.
Because of its restrictive tendencies, Saturn in the Fourth House or Cancer can make you feel limited when it comes to your emotional world or who you let into your inner, emotional world.
If you have this placement in your birth chart, earlier in life you may have found it difficult to open up to anyone outside of your close family, resulting in others labelling you as shy.
I, myself, have this placement, and during my childhood teachers would often say things like ‘I can tell she has a lot going on inside but it would be good if she spoke up more’.
The above example is good for what I think Saturn’s influence really is here. From my own experience, rather than shyness, I believe it is rather a tendency to be reserved in social situations outside of the safety of ‘home’, or a place where you are confident of your safety.
Because people with this placement may find it harder than most to interact openly with strangers or larger or newer groups of people, they may find it harder to make friends.
As they get older though, they learn that because of their natural ability to discern people well, their friends may be fewer in number but stronger and more reliable than people who have lots of friends but not many very close ones.
Wherever Saturn is in the chart is an area that ages like fine wine though, so rest easy in knowing that things will get better as you get older!
Cancer rules the breasts and womb. Organs connected to the feminine and fertility. For this reason, it could be that you experience some fertility issues, issues with birth control, or your menstrual cycle. It wouldn’t be amiss to keep an even closer eye than usual on these health areas.
If you haven’t had issues in this area before, any are likely short-term, such as for the duration of the transit, so try not to be too alarmed and seek medical support if you have concerns about your sexual or reproductive health or pregnancy.
Famous example
Madonna has Saturn in the Fourth House in Sagittarius.
As Saturn in the fourth is on the parental axis, the Fourth House/Tenth Jouse, Cancer/Capricorn axis, it can bring all kinds of limitations to your experience of your parents or parental figures.
Madonna lost her mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone (née Fortin), to breast cancer at age five.
This tumultuous event occurring for her at such a young age would have meant Madonna had a huge gap of nurturance from external sources. She would have needed to draw great strength from herself to cope with the usual processes of growing up.
In her 1989 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna reflected on her mother’s absence in her life.
“If she were alive, I would be someone else. I would be a completely different person,” she said.
Although the loss of a parent early in life is tragic, Madonna chose to rise up and do with it the best she could, a shining example of Saturn expressed at its highest potential in a birth chart. She hasn’t done too badly so far.
