Little Red Robin taught me a lesson
Retirees, It’s Time To Let the Past Go and Move Into Exciting Days
If you are frustrated in retirement, fear not.
It is Springtime in the Northeast of America. A Robin keeps slamming his head against my dining room window. The back of our house has large windows overlooking the Amish farmland. Now, in case you think our house is some palatial mansion, I assure you we live in a small two-bedroom house with big windows.
But the Red Robin, for two days, has been banging up against our window. What’s the bird thinking? Why? After two days, little Red Robin continues the assault on our window. I walked out on our patio, telling Red Robin, it’s a glass window, and you cannot get through.
Frustrated is little Red Robin. I hope my neighbor didn’t hear me talking to the birds. Red Robin pays no attention to my warning. Why not put a stop to our frustration?
We’re outside looking in
We, retirees, do the same thing, don’t we? Adjusting to retirement doesn’t come easy for some of us. Life is different now than ever for us. People aren’t lining up to welcome us back to the workplace after a sickness.
The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off. Abe Lemons, American college basketball player and coach
But, we keep knocking our heads against the work-a-day-world, don’t we? We are sure they need our expertise at the office. When will the supervisor ask for our problem-solving advice? He doesn’t. Our phone does not ring, jangle, buzz, or play a song. Nope, nothing, nada.
Our Eyes opened for sure
To our amazement, it dawns on us that we’re not needed at the office or worksite. In fact, the trucking company, the office, or the church we worked at continues without us. Honestly, they’re doing quite well.
So, let’s stop knocking our heads against the past and accept the reality we’re retired. Oh, from time to time, we should reminisce about the times past. There’s a pleasure to spend time remembering our glory or gory history but, don’t stay there.
Little Red Robin has not broken my window to get past his present situation, and you won’t either.
Oh, happy days are here again
Our retirement days are here. Let’s suck the energy out of every retirement day we have. Live life with all the enthusiasm we can muster. Before we know it, it will soon be over.
Let’s not dwell on the highs and lows of the past. Today is here and it’s sunlight days are for us to enjoy.
- I like the way Kevyn Aucoin, an American photographer and author describes our days.
Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices — today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.
When did you realize you were no longer needed on the job site? How did you handle this realization?

Get ready, the best days are ahead for us retirees. Believe it, it’s the truth.
Thanks, Richard
