Change is a problem we all face in life but I have a solution for you to consider.

In my seventy-nine years of walking the green grass of home, I’ve learned a few things. I noticed that the small moments or a simple word at the right place or time changes us. This word is at the crux of the matter I find as we age.

So, I’ve settled on this one word for 2022 to help me navigate the days, weeks, and months ahead. My word for the year is not for old retirees alone but will bring a resoluteness no matter your age. My hope is this word will help you through life’s uncertainties.

The word is; Adjust

What word were you expecting? A perplexing word like, acclimatize? I could have settled on acclimatizing, which means adjusting. But, let us keep it simple, easy to understand. Okay?

Here’s the definition of this word, adjust. It means altering or moving something to fit better. Or adjusting to an unfamiliar situation.

We’ve adjusted to the unfamiliar, haven’t we?

Most of us have been wearing masks over our faces for the last two years. These masks are something we would have thought odd years ago, and only Michel Jackson would do this. Well, we adjusted, didn’t we?

Adjust or else lose the momentum towards a rewarding future

So, I want to be open to making the adjustments as I age. Some stubbornly resist the regular changes of growing older, and I do not want to be one of them, do you?

I will adjust to being seventy-nine and not fifty-nine. We might as well, We’re on time travel, and it moves at sixty seconds a minute. Hang on. It’s quite a ride.

The first few words of The Serenity Prayer capture my idea of adjusting to my reality.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Reinhold Niebuhr, an American Reformed theologian.

Then there is the American philosopher William Warren Bartley explains how to adjust.

For every ailment under the sun, There is a remedy, or there is none; If there be one, try to find it; If there be none, never mind it.

So, the big word for 2022 is; ADJUST. Our reality is change happens to us whether we’re aware of it happening or not. I’m sure you want to move through this year with as little friction as possible. I know I do. Resisting the regular changes which happen as we age only increases our difficulties.

I’m not suggesting we agree with every change that happens. What I am saying is if the change moves us forward, then make the change necessary. Life happens, and it is not always to our liking.

So as the theologian said, God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change. And the philosopher says; if there is a remedy, find it, if not never mind it.

Here are my takeaways

  • Every year we live, the aging process demands adjustments.
  • Making adjustments eases us through to more productive days.
  • Resisting necessary changes only adds unnecessary stress.
  • We conquer and improve our self-worth by adjusting to change.

What are the adjustments you made entering your fifties, sixties, and seventies? How did you work through to a successful conclusion?

I’m optimistic about our year ahead. I hope you are too.

Thank you for reading to the very end; doesn’t always happen, but when it does; I’m one happy man.

Richard.
