Ready To Shape Up? 3 Needed Mindset-Shits To Help You Achieve Fitness Goals.

As someone who was once 177 kg, these are the things that helped me shed over 90 kg from my body.

I guess we all have been there at some point.

Staring at ourselves in the mirror, feeling unhappy with what we see, examining every flaw, stretch, saggy skin, scar, and shape that disappoints us, and not truly appreciating the view.

Until we get angry and the decision to take action while becoming a better and healthier version of ourselves kicks in,

We decide to change the whole world and promise ourselves we’ll become the healthiest mf that ever lived on this planet.

At least for one week.

Whatever may be the reason that ignites your “fitness journey”, for sure a long path awaits ahead.

And trust me, the journey is always tougher and filled with more setbacks than we anticipate.

Resisting to fall the temptation of that mouth-watering piece of chocolate, to grab a beer after a long day’s work, and summoning all your willpower to get your fatass to hit the gym for some weights or cardio, just to realize you can’t even move afterward, while enduring months of it like nothing is changing,

The thought of giving up before you see any real progress is always lurking around the corner.

It’s really hard.

I’ve been there, I know how it feels.

That’s why before you even consider throwing in the towel, let me share with you the three vital lessons I learned the hard way on my journey from 177 kg to 90kg to make your path smoother.

1. Do It For Your Body And Mind.

Every person has their unique motivation for wanting to burn weight and get fit.

Perhaps it’s rooted in childhood traumas, enduring relentless bullying, maybe the pressure from the media dictating all the time how we should look, It could even be the desire to look stunning for a significant event, and some others even have the need to do it for health issues,

While these may be some motivators and things that will help you keep focused on your path, they are all weak pillars to build something so important such as your health.

They may work as initial motivators and can help you maintain focus on your journey.

But they alone are very weak pillars to support something so important as your health.

For me honestly, there is just one reason to get in shape.

And to understand why I think that let me ask you something based on stoicism and nihilism.

What are the only two things you truly own in your life?

The two things that have been with you since birth, are here with you right now and will stay with you until your last moment in this world.

Take a moment to consider this before responding, think about it.

Wanna know the answer?

Your Body and Your Mind.

They are your only true life-lasting “companions” and the only ones you should and must count on 100% of the time.

Everything else is an illusion.

Your name, friends, relatives, parents, children, partner, and everything about your life may change,

Your job or business can disappear overnight, and countless unforeseen events can occur.

And there is absolutely nothing you can do about any of it. That is Life.

The world and life are uncontrollable, and whatever you think belongs to you, can disappear at any given moment.

The only two things will be with you in all of those circumstances?

Your Body and Your Mind.

Even the mind you can “lose” sometimes, if you know what I mean.

But Your body will always be there.

And You’ve already spent a significant portion of your precious, limited time, aka. life to things you may not even care about anymore, actions, habits, jobs, or people.

And Yet, you still neglect the well-being and self-care of your own body and mind?

I believe It’s better if you try to keep them at peak performance at all given moments since they’re the only ones you can trust, no?

Stop chasing weight loss or physical fitness goals.

Prioritize taking care of your two most loyal companions throughout life:

Your Body and Mind. That’s the real reason to do it.

2. Don’t diet, Change your lifestyle.

When someone tells me they started a new diet, I often get a bug behind my ear.

If their reason involves needing to lose weight, wanting to fit into a specific outfit, or because someone called them fat, the bug creates a nest.

As someone who struggled with being overweight most of my life, and battled emotional eating disorders for a long time, I have a deep love for food.

I Love to Eat.

(I mean who doesn’t right?).

Even though I have way more self-control nowadays, I still find myself eating like an animal from time to time.

I have a particular weak spot for all-you-can-eat buffets, sometimes only leaving after witnessing the owner crying in the back, because of his losses.

If it’s true that each person is controlled by one or the deadly sins, mine for sure is gluttony.

But I don’t do this every day. Why?

Because adopting the lifestyle and daily habits of the person I want to be doesn’t include indulging in such behaviors.

Once you realize the only way for you to become who you want to be, is by doing exactly what that person does on your day, even in the small actions, to build the same kind of mentality.

It gets easier to control yourself and not doubt your decisions while going back to self-destructive habits.

Since the person you aspire to be, probably doesn’t do half of the actions and especially in the same manner as you do in your daily life.

Otherwise, you would already be there.

To achieve your dream life, you need to kill who you are and become the one who sustains that lifestyle.

Everything else is an illusion.

3. You Either Do Something Or You Don’t, But The Future Will Arrive As Consequence of Today’s Actions.

The future is an illusion.

A distorted illusion that arrives directed only by the actions and choices we make today.

Some people nourish this wild notion that if they delay something long enough, it will miraculously happen on its own.

They wait for a new job to fall into their lap instead of actively seeking one, postpone joining the gym until next Monday rolls around, plan to quit smoking after just one more cigarette, start something when finally ready, or convince themselves they’ll prioritize self-care once they have more money or free time.

Let’s be real.

It won’t happen unless You take action. And the longer You delay taking action, the harder it will become.

As I approach my thirties, (Crazy to state that, just yesterday I was a kiddo),

I see people around my age and older who seem to have learned very little about life and have never truly prioritized personal growth or cared deeply about their experiences.

They often seek easy escapes and become frustrated when things don’t work as they desire.

And If we speak about health then…Jezz…it becomes even worse.

People have a coffee every 30 minutes during work hours, and after work, they head to happy hour with the boys.

It was meant to be just “one beer,” but you know how it goes. End up juggling between cigarette puffs and alcoholic sips to control anxiety, and that one beer turns into ten while picking finger food as fries or other greasy bar snacks.

After arriving home, the reflux from the oily food starts to kick in, and a headache due to caffeine withdrawal comes into play. Take two aspirins and a pill for gastric issues, but since the headache persists it’s better to take another stronger pill to aid sleep.

Oh!, and by the way, almost forgot the one the doctor recommended to regulate hormones and blood pressure.

It’s a cycle of unhealthy habits on top of unhealthy habits like a cascade.

I mean, what the fu*c?

For Real, Wtf?

Photo by Kyle Simmons on Unsplash

And this isn’t an occasional thing or a once-a-month thing, It’s literally every single day.

I wish I could say I’m joking, but I’m sure you’ve seen it firsthand, or perhaps even found yourself caught up in similar behaviors, right?

And trust me I’m not here to judge, Deeply I probably don’t even care,

plus Who Am I to judge your choices? that’s personal for each of us.

But…

Is that really how you plan on spending your days for the rest of your life?

To be fixing the “unbalance” in your body and mind with stuff that makes it even worse?

Well, I don’t.

And I can see pretty clearly which destination those who choose to do this are going to.

I prefer and choose to go the other way.

I’ll plan to reach my future self, the best I can, and the actions which I shouldn’t take nowadays to make it possible, are pretty obvious,

Just need to take responsibility.

Remember If you truly wanna get fit:

  • Take care of your body and mind, they are your only life-lasting possessions.
  • Become the person who lives the lifestyle you want to reach.
  • Your future is molded by the actions and decisions you make today. Take charge and be accountable.

If you put these 3 things in your mind, I’m sure you’ll achieve whatever you want, and your body and mind will thank you.
