Raw Eggs Make The Coat Shine
March Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Pet people”
“You know I deserve an egg.”
Some years ago, I accidentally dropped an egg on my way from the dinosaur pen. I could not have picked a worse spot. An awkward corner between the egg store, the coat rack, and the giant toolbox, where there is no room to wield a cloth, and no way to reach an escaped egg without resorting to a Mary Chang headstand special.
Cue the Caped Crusader! She flew to the rescue with a slick demonstration of the efficiency and length of the canine tongue. Within seconds, all trace of the spilled egg was gone.
She is always keen to provide an escort at egg collection time, and sometimes she gets lucky — accidents will happen. There was a brief phase where she made her own luck with a strategy of tactical elbow-jogging, but we had to put a stop to that. Occasional eggs are fine and give her coat a lovely gloss, but the number of eggs she would eat if given free rein — specifically “all the eggs” — would lead to problems.
There is some debate about whether or not dogs should eat raw eggs, but those who say it’s unsafe seem to base their view on the argument that a rotten egg could cause problems. That point — don’t feed rotten stuff to your dog — could be made about any food. In all the years we’ve kept poultry, our dogs have always had occasional eggs as treats and have come to no harm.
