Quickie: How Singles Really Feel About Dating Apps

Swiping to find love? Chances are, you may hate it.

People join dating apps because of the promised convenience of finding love — or so they initially think. But do the apps really live up to the hype? Is finding love really as easy as a swipe?

Absolutely not, according to a study conducted by the Thriving Center of Psychology.

In fact, after surveying 1,064 singles, the organization found that 67 percent of them used dating apps and 69 percent of those users don’t even like them. There were various reasons for this, including finding it hard to meet people online in general (75 percent) to not feeling safe when using these apps (35 percent).

Not surprisingly, the latter reason has altered people’s pre-date behavior, with 38 percent of respondents admitting to researching a potential date online — 29 percent spend over 20 minutes doing so — and 18 percent running background checks before a date. And these singles have not been shy or secretive about what they’re doing: Some (14 percent) have confessed that they looked up their date, only to find out that their date did the same to them (19 percent).

This all is not to say that everyone on a dating app is on there to find love. While 69 percent of people use these apps to find dates, 16 percent actually use them to make friends and 15 percent are just looking for a casual hookup. Whatever the reason for using these apps, the Thriving Center of Psychology found that navigating the single life isn’t always what television and movies tell us it is.

“Being single can be a mixture of freedom and frustration all at the same time,” the organization explained in a blog post about the study. “It’s okay to feel a combination of emotions if you have not found a significant other. Just know that you’re not alone in this journey and that hundreds of thousands of others are navigating the dating world too.”
