Summary

A significant number of Americans keep their sex toy usage a secret from their partners, despite growing acceptance of sexuality and self-pleasure, as revealed by a LELO survey.

Abstract

The article titled "Quickie: The Sex Toy Secret" discusses the findings of a survey by LELO, an intimate lifestyle products company, which indicates a prevalent secrecy surrounding sex toy usage among sexually active Americans. Out of 2,000 respondents, 46% have purchased a sex toy, yet a third conceal this fact from their partners. The survey also shows that 61% of sex toy users fear their partner's disapproval, and a majority prefer using these toys alone, with 57% wishing their partners never discover their sex toy habits. Despite a trend towards sex-positive attitudes, the data suggests that stigma still exists, as evidenced by the reluctance to share this aspect of personal sexuality.

Opinions

  • LELO's Global Brand Manager, Sara Kranj ec Jukić, emphasizes the importance of sex positivity, acknowledging that while attitudes are shifting, there is still progress to be made in normalizing sexuality and masturbation.
  • The article implies that a considerable portion of the population holds reservations about their partner's reaction to their sex toy use, indicating a gap between private sexual exploration and open communication within relationships.
  • The survey results highlight a discrepancy between the personal use of sex toys and the public discourse around sexual wellness, suggesting that societal acceptance has not fully translated into individual comfort with sharing these practices.

Do you enjoy a little self-love with a sex toy from time to time? Does your partner know? According to a study conducted by intimate lifestyle products company LELO, chances are, your little mechanical device is a big secret in your relationship.

“Sex positivity really comes down to believing that sexuality is a normal and healthy part of the human experience.”

In a survey of 2,000 sexually active Americans, LELO found that 46 percent of respondents have purchased a sex toy, but one third of the people who own sex toys have kept this information to themselves. Also, six in ten people said they would rather use sex toys alone and 57 percent would prefer that their partner never finds out about their sex toy use.

Why all the secrecy? The survey found that 61 percent of sex toy users believe their partner would be disapproving of their battery-operated self-service.

“Sex positivity really comes down to believing that sexuality is a normal and healthy part of the human experience,” said LELO’s Global Brand Manager Sara Kranjčec Jukić. “While the data shows a trend toward more tolerant attitudes toward sex and masturbation, we still have a long way to go.”
