Summary

The website content is a reflective poem and accompanying text by environmental scientist and climate speaker Adam Deitsch, who humorously laments the sprouting of neglected potatoes and contemplates the effort of planting them amidst challenges from wildlife.

Abstract

The poem "Put Us in the Ground Already!" by Adam Deitsch humorously addresses a box of potatoes that have sprouted after being left uneaten. The author muses on the potatoes' transformation from food to potential plants, reflecting on the cycle of life and the human relationship with food. Despite the potatoes' eagerness to be planted, the author hesitates due to the labor involved and the likelihood of the plants being ravaged by raccoons and herons. Deitsch, who is also the founder of "Just the Recipe," uses this poem to subtly highlight the connection between food, nature, and human effort, while also showcasing his broader interests in environmental topics and his love for food through his various roles and writings.

Opinions

  • The author playfully personifies the potatoes, giving them a voice to express their desire to be planted rather than wasted.
  • There is a sense of resignation and humor in the author's acknowledgment of the futility in planting the potatoes, given the potential for them to be destroyed by wildlife.
  • The poem reflects an underlying environmental consciousness, emphasizing the importance of not wasting food and considering the ecological implications of our actions.
  • Deitsch's additional work, including his role as a climate speaker and founder of "Just the Recipe," suggests a deep passion for and commitment to environmental and food-related issues.

Put Us in the Ground Already!

A Poem

you pulled us up you never ate us you let us sit now we’re unfit

unfit for you that may be true not good to eat but ready to plant feet

plant roots deep under before we get dead-y it’s honestly a wonder why you don’t put us in the ground already

I picked up a box of food a little while back and it had an abundance of potatoes. We’ve had baked potatoes. We’ve had mashed potatoes. We’ve cut a few up and made some breakfast potatoes. But these have just been sitting, watching their family get murdered in front of them. Now they’ve made a last ditch effort to spawn replicants of themselves. I should probably put them in the ground, but it’s so much work and the raccoons and herons attack anything I plant.
