Opinions

  • The author suggests that the method of heating a cheese sandwich is crucial, with a preference for grilling over pan-frying to truly earn the name "grilled cheese."
  • There is a playful critique of the common practice of calling a cheese sandwich "grilled" even when it is not made on a grill.
  • The author's appreciation for food is evident, as he not only writes about environmental and policy issues but also founds a recipe publication and writes food poetry.
  • The inclusion of a poem by the author's son indicates a personal connection to the subject of food poetry and suggests a familial sharing of interests in culinary arts and writing.

Cheese Sandwiches

A Prompted Poem on Grills

who doesn’t love to eat a cheese sandwich melty, stringy, gooey, and chewy

add some tomato, or maybe sliced onion spices and peppers, there’s no wrong ingredient

but when it comes to the way you heat it that’s what’s most important

frying in a pan is my favorite a little butter on the bread adds a beautiful crisp

but if you don’t use a grill did you really make grilled cheese

This poem is about grilled cheese, and how it’s almost always misnamed because it isn’t made on a grill. It was inspired by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她)’s prompt from a poem about paninis and/or grills. If you’d like to give it a go, check it out here:
