Productivity Habits of Millionaires
Have you ever wondered how millionaires stay so darn productive? I used to think they just had superhuman willpower. But after studying some of the most successful people around, I realized many of their productivity hacks are simple habits we can all adopt.
I’m not saying these tricks will automatically make you rich. We all know it takes hard work and some luck to hit the big time. But applying some of the routines millionaires swear by can help you achieve more of your goals and get ahead in life.
I’ll share what I’ve learned casually like we’re having a cup of coffee. Cool? Cool.
Habit 1: Rise Early, Before the World Wakes Up
You’ve probably heard that a lot of ultra-successful folks are early risers. It’s definitely a common trait.
Apple CEO Tim Cook gets up at 3:45 am every day. And Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, rises at 5:00 am sharp.
As for yours truly, I am not naturally a morning person. I love staying up late. But I’ve been experimenting with waking up earlier.
Those quiet early morning hours are just so peaceful and distraction-free. I can plow through important tasks and get a big head start on the day before emails and calls start pouring in.
And even on days when I don’t have a rigid schedule, knowing I’m already ahead and productive first thing makes me feel more in control. I find I make better decisions when I feel calm and on top of things.
So if you currently snooze through the dawn, I’d encourage you to test out rising a little earlier. Start with 15–30 minutes before you normally get up, and go to bed correspondingly sooner.
It can be hard at first. Not gonna lie, I still sometimes hit the snooze button and end up rushing out the door in a frazzled state. Hey, I’m human!
Habit 2: Block Out Focused Time
Alright, this next tip has been crucial for me: Block out uninterrupted time to concentrate on important tasks.
I’m sure you know that nagging feeling of being crazy busy, but somehow not getting the right things done. With so many distractions and demands on our attention, it’s tough to stay focused.
Millionaires are vigilant about protecting stretches of deep work time in their calendars. They block out chunks of 1–3 hours for their highest-priority efforts.
For instance, author and investor Tim Ferriss does this with his “Golden 3 Hours” each morning. He ignores all distractions to fully concentrate on vital projects.
This might seem rigid or harsh. But it forces you to be selective and intentional with where you direct your mental energies.
I aim to carve out focus blocks of time most days. Sometimes I still get sidetracked from urgent random issues. But having scheduled time devoted to priorities keeps me on track much better.
And when I know focused time is coming up, I find I procrastinate less beforehand. I’m like, “Okay, I’ve got 90 minutes blocked off at 10 am to work on that sales presentation. I can hold off email until then and prep my materials now.” Gotta trick your brain sometimes!
Habit 3: Make Your Health a Top Goal
This one may seem obvious. But super successful folks almost universally prioritize exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
When you have boundless energy and stamina, you can achieve so much more!
Without decent health, everything suffers.
Arianna Huffington talks about how she used to sacrifice sleep while building her company, HuffPost (formerly The Huffington Post). She eventually collapsed from exhaustion.
After that scare, she realized nothing was worth jeopardizing her health. She became a prominent advocate for “sleeping your way to the top.”
Most millionaires and billionaires I’ve researched or met in person follow rigorous morning and evening routines. They have finely tuned sleep habits and stick to consistent workout regimens.
I used to think I could push through on caffeine and determination. But taking care of your fundamental needs allows you to sustainably operate at a much higher level.
Habit 4: Cut Back on Mindless Media
Alright, this is a biggie most of us struggle with…limiting distractions from television, social media, gaming, aimless browsing, etc.
Successful folks are super intentional about how they consume media and entertainment. They structure leisure time rather than endlessly scrolling and clicking on autopilot.
For instance, author Michael Hyatt schedules all media consumption in 25 or 50 minute blocks. When the timer goes off, he switches to a planned productive task.
And a lot of achievers set aside specific nights or weekends for entertainment, like “Movie Fridays.” This prevents it from bleeding into focused work time.
I’ll be honest, restricting media is freaking hard. I love plopping on the couch and streaming reality TV after a long day. But I pay for it by feeling scattered and wasting too much time.
Lately I’ve been experimenting with limiting social media to 30 minutes per day, max. I set a timer and try to just check notifications and reply to direct messages. No endless scrolling through random posts!
This has freed up so much mental space already. I find I’m better able to tune into my own thoughts and projects.
Habit 5: Automate and Outsource
Wanna know one of the top secrets of ultra-productive people? They delegate or automate tasks that waste their time and mental bandwidth.
You only have so many hours in a day. So the more you can offload or streamline routine activities, the more you can prioritize strategic efforts.
For instance, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is fanatical about automation. At his companies, any repetitive task that can possibly be handled by machines or software gets automated. No exceptions.
You may not have an army of engineers to build custom automation. But we all have access to apps and digital tools that can remove grunt work.
Think about tasks that suck up your time but don’t require your highest abilities. Maybe entering data, scheduling appointments, paying bills, filing papers, filling out forms, etc. These things can often be automated or passed to an assistant.
Ask yourself: What can I eliminate from my plate that’s a chore with low mental demands? Start delegating or automating those time vampires!
Habit 6: Practice the 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 principle, is also called the Pareto principle.
In short, it says that 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts. Crazy right?
The implication is that you should identify and focus on those hyper-vital 20% tasks. This is how you get the most bang from your buck.
Gary Vaynerchuk is a huge advocate of the 80/20 rule. He’s constantly assessing if he’s spending time on high-impact money and attention-generating activities for his business. Anything that doesn’t cut gets eliminated or automated.
I’ll be honest, it’s hard to have the discipline to prune away less productive tasks.
Get out a piece of paper and make two columns. On the left, jot down your main responsibilities and regular routines. Then on the right, mark the 20% that delivers the majority of value and impact. Be brutally honest! This exercise will reveal where you should be directing the bulk of your precious focus and mental energy.
Habit 7: Set Ambitious Goals and Visualize
You’ve probably noticed that millionaires set their sights high. They have bold dreams and ambitious plans.
Richard Branson has a quote I love: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
Of course, this level of big thinking doesn’t happen overnight. It takes work to develop the habit of setting audacious goals and really believing they’re possible.
That’s why visualization is key. Successful people take time each day to mentally rehearse to reach their goals.
Famed business consultant Peter Drucker advised executives: “Spend 15 minutes a day on reflective thinking.” During this time they would visualize their objectives and imagine potential outcomes, both positive and negative.
Tony Robbins is also huge on mental rehearsal. He suggests spending 10–20 minutes daily visualizing your dream life in vivid detail. Imagine how it looks and feels when you reach your biggest goals. And key in on the emotions elicited. Do this repetitively to reprogram your subconscious mind.
