Summary

The article discusses the lack of a sharing culture on Medium and its potential benefits for writers, readers, and the platform's growth.

Abstract

The author of the article expresses concern over the apparent reluctance of Medium users to share content, noting that in over a year of using the platform, they have rarely seen stories being shared. The article argues that sharing helps everyone involved: it exposes readers to valuable content, gives writers more visibility, and aids in the platform's expansion by attracting new users. Drawing comparisons with platforms like YouTube, where sharing is integral to content dissemination, the author suggests that Medium could encourage sharing by adding a "shared stories" tab to writer profiles. This feature could provide new writers with exposure and help readers discover quality content more easily. The author concludes by emphasizing the individual's role in fostering a sharing culture and lists several social media platforms where users can share Medium stories.

  • Sharing is mutually beneficial, as it can help solve common problems by disseminating solutions and support writers by increasing their exposure.
  • Medium's growth could be significantly enhanced by a more robust sharing culture, similar to platforms like YouTube.
  • A dedicated "shared stories" section on writer profiles could incentivize and facilitate content sharing on Medium.

Medium is a platform where you have to find good stories yourself because no one is ready to share them with you. They read, learn, enjoy and leave.

I have spent almost one and a half years on Medium but haven’t seen anyone sharing a story. Sharing is beneficial for everyone, whether it’s writers or readers. And not only for them, but it also helps the platform expand its reach.

For example, If you have found a solution to a problem that everyone is facing, you should consider sharing it with your friends and some of the community members to help them solve their problems. It doesn’t only help them, but also the writers gain some exposure.

And not only this, when you share stories with people outside of Medium, It helps the platform making some new users which then converts to subscribers as time passes.

Many platforms are living on its sharing cultures like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

You may have noticed that there is a YouTube link or video everywhere, whether it’s a social media app or any other website you visit. It’s because of their platforms sharing culture. People on YouTube are ready to share your content everywhere to support their favorite creators and also help other people learn something new.

That’s the reason YouTube has created such a massive audience. It’s not the only factor that helped YouTube attaining such a massive audience. There are many other factors, but no one can deny that sharing is one of them.

If Medium wants to encourage the sharing culture on their platform. They should start adding a separate tab on every writer’s profile for “shared stories”.

It will be beneficial for both the readers and writers;

  • It will help new writers gain some exposure if one of their stories is shared by some of the big writers.
  • It will help readers find out useful content easily that has been shared by their favorite writers.
