POETRY | MOTHERHOOD
Passion Fruit
Of a birth before time
There are lanterns swinging in the wind, a wind-chime singing along — or metallic din —
sobriety is a dream.
Now, I bicker with my memories of what was, all I remember is aquamarine green and stark white —
and glints of stainless steel.
The fruit of passion was born of our wedding night, a flower bud, too petite to be true —
but touches me nevertheless.
I caress the only truth that belongs to us, ready to taste the fruit as such and its accompaniments —
it has been rewarding, no less.
The juice of the choice is enthralling. She was a sapling, fallen early; the knife I took was worth it.
And she continues to bloom.

Poet’s note:
My daughter was born preterm through an emergency C-section that saved her life. Although I was healthy and active while pregnant and all prepared to have a natural childbirth, the Almighty’s plans were different. The unexpected surgical delivery left me aghast and displaced emotionally but I slowly got back to being myself through poetry.
