Part-Time Creators: Do You Understand Your Reality
When you do, you can have freedom to create
This one is for you.
Whether you call yourself a part-time creator, side-hustler, or solo-prenuer you most likely have a 9–5 job and other things going on in your life that keep you from going ‘monk-mode’ on a project.
I have found that we must acknowledge and accept our circumstances in order to have freedom to create our best work.
On top of that, we must step into our reality in order to maximize our productivity with our creative ventures.
At this point, we have decided on our creative priorities, and asked the hard questions of ourselves. These things help us to know where we are in our creative journey.
But the next step helps us navigate our work toward our goals.
Our Reality Determines How We Go About Our Work
Yet, what I have found, is that when we embrace our reality, we can figure out how to make the time to get things done on our creations and find ways to succeed. — J.R. Heimbigner Writes
I have a 9–5. Yes, I took a demotion to have more margin for my family and my creative work. But I still have to work on that job during the week.
I am a husband and father of three little girls. That means I am going to ballet and piano recitals and practices. We go on father-daughter dates. And I spend time helping them with school.
On top of that, we host a house church in our home once a week and I spend time during the week planning or meeting with people in our church.
There are a lot of things going on. So, how do I write blog posts, social media posts, and work on my books?
It’s not about elimination, its about using time well.
As creators, we can be a slave of time. Or, we can take advantage of time. If we can take control of our time better, we can actually get the work done on our books and projects when the time is there.
It’s an excuse that we don’t have time to create. There is time in our day to do it. We just need to find it and guard it for our creative journey.
Don’t eliminate things unless they truly can be cut out. That’s why I do Fire Fridays. However, find the places to take advantage of the time you have available already.
Accept your reality, gain your creative freedom.
When you accept life to be the way that it is, you will gain freedom that will change the way you work.
For example, I write in the mornings for an hour or two during the week. Then on the weekends, I write for a few hours in the morning even after my kids get up.
Now, that I go back to the office for my 9–5 one day a week, my lunch break is used write as well. These are the times I take and guard. And because of that, I am free to enjoy my family in the other times.
So, where is your space for creating your work and projects? Are you guarding it? Or are you letting it go?
