You decide that perhaps the best way into the palace courtyard would be the direct route. Over the wall, when nobody is looking.
You move to the right-hand side of the complex, where the wall is at its lowest point.
The cover of darkness is going to help, but there are certain challenges. You need to stack up the crates for one thing, then time your climb just right. And when you get inside, you’ll need to somehow evade detection.
If you want to change your mind and try to charm the guards at the gate, click here (if you haven’t already tried). Otherwise read on.
You and Laskus set to work. Staying as stealthy as you can, you begin to build a pyramid of crates at the foot of the castle wall. Three along the base, then two more, and finally, one more to get up to the top should do it…
(Here is a link to a dice-rolling app!).
Encounter: Stacking the crates
Challenge rating: Easy (roll 9+)
Roll using brawn.
Try up to twice. If you fail, click here.If you succeed, read on below.Somehow, you’ve managed to get the crates into place quickly and near-silently. Now, you and Laskus find yourself crouched down on the top crate, your heads just a foot lower than the parapet.
You can hear the guards walking along, their boots thumping and their chainmail clanking as they go.
Now it’s just a matter of timing your move just right.
One needs to have walked at least a dozen yards away, and then you need to scramble over and down the other side before the next one to approach can see you.
Encounter: Stealthily past the guards
Challenge rating: Easy (roll 9+)
Roll using wits.If you fail, click here.If you succeed, read on below. You make it. Your timing is perfect; one guard had walked away almost as far as the tower in the far corner, and the other was just turning onto the wall. If he saw a shadowy movement in the near-dark ahead, it wasn’t enough to alarm him.
Moments later, both you and Laskus are hanging by your fingertips from the inside of the wall. You hang there for a minute, still in the shadows, until it seems to be clear below. Fortunately nobody much is around. You drop down with a thump, trying not to yelp or groan at the pain in your knees, then slowly get up and look around the courtyard….
Continue.
