The Gates of the Baron’s Palace

A quest: Investigating the Baron, continued.

You decide to speak to the guards. No route like the direct route, right? And walking through the gates feels like a better idea than clambering over the walls like some kind of… criminal.

“You sure about this?” hisses Laskus as you approach the gates.

But your mind is made up.

“Greetings, good citizens,” you say to the pair. One guard is tall, lithe, like a runner. The other is stocky, shorter, and also older-looking, with a wrinkled face. Both of them look like veterans of, well… more action than you have seen.

“What is it, peasant?” says the taller man. He speaks in an unfamiliar accent; one of the hired mercenaries from overseas, you assume.

“We are here to pick up a delivery,” you say. It was the first idea that came to mind.

The man’s eyes narrow suspiciously as he looks first at you, and then at Laskus. “At this time of day?”

(Here is a link to a dice-rolling app!).

Encounter: Sweet-talking the city guards
Challenge rating: Medium (roll 15+)
Roll using charm.
If you fail, the guards send you packing with punches and yells of abuse.
Lose one point from health, and then click here to try scaling
the wall instead.
If you succeed, read on below.

The taller guard is still eyeing you suspiciously, but the older man intervenes. “Must be to dispose of the Baron’s personal refuse,” he mutters. “That’s why it’s not a merchant.”

Picking up on this, you nod enthusiastically, though a part of you is deeply concerned about what you might be getting into. “That’s right, brave guards. We are highly discrete in such work. That’s why we were called.”

The tall guard grunts again, and waves you into the palace courtyard.

Continue.
