“Hey you”, your new neighbour said, “is something wrong?”
You instantly panic. Sure, you had emerged from your apartment to talk to the neighbours you’ve always known to see if they knew anything about this weird bee tattoo and fancy invitation business, but that’s because you’ve known them for a long time.
Sasha, who lives to your left, was kind of a cool guy with a gooey filling, like a lava cake. On the outside, he looked cool and unapproachable, but on the inside, he’s the person who brings over his grandmother’s baking to everyone on the street.
And Sandra? Sure, her kids are goddamn annoying because they’d bounce on their trampoline and spray you with their water guns as soon as they got high enough in the air. You didn’t fault her for this because damn, you only have to deal with them in the 0.2 seconds you get squirted and have to bring your summer reading inside. Sandra spends every waking and sleeping moment caring for these over-excited beans. She deals with all that and takes the time to ask about your day sometimes. And that’s incredible.
But this new neighbour? She was kinda cute. In fact, you’d ask her out on a date if you weren’t dealing with such a crisis. And in classic fight or flight, you choose to fly away, your feet picking up to a run in the opposite direction.
Hopefully, she’d think you were just taking a mid-run break.
You weren’t even a few meters away before you felt like you tripped. Normally, when you trip, you’d hit the cement, bracing for impact and scraped knees. This time, you went straight through the cement and screamed.
And continued screaming.
And continued screaming.
And continued screaming.
Until you ran out of air, which was pretty soon, because you honestly aren’t that fit.
That’s when you finally take a breath and look around. You were floating what seemed like “downwards”, though in this space, you weren’t sure where “up” was anymore.
Small points glittered in the distance, like stars, but for some reason, you knew they weren’t stars.
Your bee tattoo flutters down your arm into the palm of your hand.
“Hello?” it said.
