This whole situation has made you more uneasy than the time that professor defended slavery. You look back at Gail. What was going on? Why were you being dragged into all of this? Gail was staring ahead, her mouth agape, and pointing at the dog as it ran.

You weren’t about to start chasing a stray dog. And you certainly weren’t going to start a confrontation with a McDonald’s employee. You look back down at your hands and see the pink marshmallow staring back at you.

Unsure of what came over you, you felt a sudden urge to eat the marshmallow. You shove it in your mouth and give it a quick chew. It really did taste like strawberry.

Gail must have heard you chewing, because she was finally able to turn her attention away from the dog… which seemed to have stopped running and paced impatiently, as if to coax you into chasing it.

“What did you do?!”

She was shouting at you, but you couldn’t hear anything but a muffled horn. You felt like a Charles Shultz character being scolded by an adult. It very quickly occurs to you that eating the marshmallow was a bad idea. Everything feels hot like you’ve been thrown into a fire.

A quick blast of cold and a rosy hue glazes over everything. You fall back in the driver’s seat and your eyes lose focus. Gail is still womp-womping away.

She reaches for your shoulder, but it’s as if your not really there. You don’t feel her touch so much as it feels like her hand passed right through you.

You sink deeper and deeper into the seat until the rest of the car seems like a dark tower with high windows that you’ve been imprisoned in by some evil fairytale villain.

Then everything fades away.

You wake up in your apartment, unsure of what happened at all.

You walk to the kitchen to grab a glass of water, and see the invitation sitting on the table. Next to it is a blue marshmallow.
