One of My Favorite Writers Just Hinted I Had Found My Writer’s Voice.

And debunked a myth!

I am a fan of Tim Denning. He is down-to-earth and original and I find his finance articles super helpful. Typically, when you like a writer’s content, you can’t wait for their next publication. And if you like several writers, you play catch up.

Well, I have been busy with life. I have little time to know what my favorite writers have been up to, including Tim. A few days back, when I had some free moments, I scrolled over to his profile to see if he had written anything I might be interested in. He had.

A week ago, he published an article on how to find the most profitable niche. If you have been on Medium long enough, you must have encountered some writers going on and on about finding your niche…almost like a holy grail. They emphasized its profitability.

It makes sense if you are on Medium to make money. The thing is that emphasis can be a bit intimidating for fresh writers. It’s also irritating to those who’ve just come here to have some fun or those who need a mental outlet. Some questions might go through your mind like:

Why the hell are they going on and on about this? I am just here to have fun.

Okay, how do the hell do I find this bloody niche?

For a long time, I wrote on any topic I liked, so I found it restricting to be confined to a niche. A few people asked me privately if I would prefer writing only about health topics and I responded only if I’d enjoy writing about that topic. Not for the sake of niches.

This is where Tim’s article comes in and here’s my take. Your niche is your worldview and perspective. It’s your voice and your style. It is what distinguishes you from the next writer on Medium and ChatGPT. It is not necessarily a confinement to a subject. Instead, it’s a writer’s distinct voice in the myriad of voices on the platform.

With that distinct voice, you can now write on any chosen topic and escape the boredom that sometimes comes from writing for a specific niche. You live your life and you tell your life stories through your worldview. That’s your niche.

I am not one to dance to trends and so, I never quite bought into the niche narrative. Writing on this platform started as fun and is still fun. I write anything I want when I need to. Trying to niche down takes the fun out of that.
